Volume Two ISBN 0-205-56810-6, 2008. Course Specific Instructions: Each instructor will attach his/her specific instructions. Course Description: This course is a survey of United States history from the disputed election of 1876 to the end of the Cold War in 1990. Primary emphasis is placed on ideas and social concepts that constitute the American heritage. Course Purpose: To acquaint students with the diversity of American history and to promote critical thinking in interrelating the past to the present. Fundamentally, the course promotes general understanding of a body of knowledge any literate person should possess about the history of his own country. Course Requirements: To maximize a student’s potential to complete this course, he/she should attend all class meetings, complete all homework assignments and examinations in a timely manner, and complete all other projects or papers as assigned in the instructor’s specific instructions. Course Evaluation: See the instructor's course information sheet for specific items used in evaluating student performance. Attendance Policy: Whenever absences become excessive and in the instructor's opinion, minimum course objectives cannot be met due to absences, the student will be withdrawn from the course. Each instructor will have additional information about attendance on his/her course information sheet.Student Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be familiar with the evolution of the nation and its role in the world from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twenty-first century. Course Description & Objectives: The purpose of this course is to provide the student with a survey of the history of the United States from post-Civil War Reconstruction to the present. We will examine how national events affected the lives of ordinary citizens and focus our attention on the diversity of American life. Social, cultural, economic, geographic, political, and diplomatic aspects will be highlighted. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: * Identify important individuals and events of the period and discuss the historical development of the United States in a global context. * Describe the elements and events that contributed to the settlement of the United States and the distribution of its population. * Identify personalities and ideas that have shaped American government and culture. * Discuss the evolution of the culture, economy, and government of the United States* Explain how the unique history of the United States fits into the larger pattern or world history The course is divided into four units of study that include the following chapters and topics: Unit 1 Chapter 15 – Reconstruction and the South Chapter 16 – The Conquest of the West Chapter 17-- An Industrial Giant Chapter 18 – American Society in the Industrial Age Unit 2 Chapter 19 – Intellectual and Cultural Trends Chapter 20 – Politics: Local, State, and National Chapter 21 – The Age of Reform Chapter 22 – From Isolation to Empire Chapter23 – Woodrow Wilson and the Great War Unit 3 Chapter 24 – Postwar Society and Culture: Change and Adjustment Chapter 25 – The New Era Chapter 26 – The New Deal
