The American Promise: A History of the United States. Vol. 2. 4th edition. Bedford/St. Martins Publishers. Course Description and Purpose: This course is a chronological treatment of the history of the United States from 1876 to present day. It will not only highlight the major events, but also focus on the important political, social, economic and cultural structures of this timeframe. Materials used will include lectures, textbook, outside readings and audiovisuals. The purpose of this class is to provide students a general synopsis of the events, people and issues that have influenced the United States from 1876 to the present day. Expected Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the major events and people of the period. Methods for assessing this expected learning outcome: Exams 1-4, Quizzes 1-4, Class Discussion, Homework Assignments. 2. Identify the social, political, economic and cultural structures that have impacted the period. Methods for assessing this expected learning outcome: Exams 1-4, Quizzes 1-4, Class Discussion, Homework Assignments. 3. Determine how historical events of this time period have influenced the United States today. Methods for assessing this expected learning outcome: Exams 1-4, Quizzes 1-4, Class Discussion, Homework Assignments. 4. Assess the major themes of governmental and political thought. Methods for assessing this expected learning outcome: Exams 1-4, Quizzes 1-4, Class Discussion, Homework Assignments. 5. Understand how the behaviors and interactions among groups developed throughout this period. Methods for assessing this expected learning outcome: Exams 1-4, Quizzes 1-4, Class Discussion, Homework Assignments. 6. Explain how interactions among individuals and institutions affect historical events of the time period.Methods for assessing this expected learning outcome: Exams 1-4, Quizzes 1-4, Class Discussion, Homework Assignments. GRADING: Exam 1: 10% Exam 2: 15% Exam 3: 15% Final Exam: 15% Quiz: 5% Quiz: 5% Quiz: 5% Homework: 20% Essay: 10% Coursework: 1. Four regular exams will be given. The four exams will consist of: *25 multiple choice questions worth 3 points each. A scantron will be provided by me. * 1 essay worth 25 points * 5 bonus multiple choice questions worth 2 points each The exams will consist of material entirely from lecture notes. If you miss a class, make sure and get the notes from a classmate. The Final Exam is NOT comprehensive. 2. Four quizzes will be given from the textbook. Each quiz will have five multiple choice questions and five true/false questions. Each question will be worth 10 points each. Two fill-in-the-blank bonus questions will be worth 10 points each. Your lowest quiz grade will be dropped. 3. Homework is due on the date that is listed on the syllabus. For each class period it’s late, 10 points will be taken off the grade. If you know you will be absent that day, you can email me the answers. Homework assignments will be given from the textbook and outside readings. Homework will be posted on Blackboard. Late work will only be accepted for TWO WEEKS after the due date ONLY. 4. An essay will be required that answers the following question: *What person in 20th century American history was the most important and why? The sources you use will include your textbook, your lecture notes, and TWO ACADEMIC SOURCES. Internet websites will not be allowed as an outside source. JSTOR is a good electronic database to use. An article or book are both considered academic sources. Plagiarism is a serious offense. It will not only result in a 0 for this assignment, but could result in expulsion from the College and/or TTAPS program. The essay will be graded on creativity, grammar, punctuation, spelling, content, organization of thought, and historical accuracy. The essay should be 3-5 pages in length. You should use 12 font, Times New Roman, and double spaced sentences. Make sure and cite your sources, including the use of footnotes. 4. Attendance will be taken every class period. Per the TTAPS program attendance policy, youare allowed to miss three classes. Here is a refresher on your Student Contract: There are no excused absences. Absences are reported to the TTAP office. An absence is defined as the following: · Failing to attend a scheduled class · Missing 15 or more minutes of a scheduled class. · Leaving class early without notifying the instructor and obtaining approval from the instructor · Failing to come to class prepared. For example, failing to have class assignments, books, or other specified materials. · Doctor’s notes will not be accepted as an excused absence. Doctor’s notes for missing class may only be used when appealing dismissal from TTAP. Instructors and advisors will not accept documentation of a doctor’s not until an appeal is in process. Three absences are allowed during the semester for each 3 credit hour course. Arriving to class more than 15 minutes late will be counted as an absence in the class. No exceptions. A tardy is defined as arriving between 10 and 15 minutes late to class. For example if class begins at 10:00am and you arrive at 10:11am, you will be counted tardy. After receiving three tardies, you will accumulate an absence in that specific class. Excessive tardies will lead to dismissal from TTAP. TTAP attendance is MANDATORY. Non-compliance with the rules of attendance will result in a student being SEPARATED FROM TTAP. Students may appeal withdrawals when unusual extenuating circumstances exist by picking up an Appeal of Withdrawal form in Holden Hall Room 80 within five (5) days of the last obtained absence. The written appeal, along with appropriate original documentation, must accompany the Appeal of Withdrawal form and returned to Holden Hall 80 before the five (5) days have expired.” Important Stuff
