ENGINEERING PROBLEM SOLVINGOne of the most important skills of both the technician and engineer is that of problem solving. However, it is not enough to just "get the answer", but one must be able to present the line of reasoning and computations to one's colleagues. This enables checks and to incorporate the work into overall projects. Although there is no "best" format for presentation of engineering calculations there are certain features each must have.Since at this time in their technical careers, most students have not developed a pattern on problem solving, this module will present a method preferred at South Campus for technical work. You may later develop improvementsto suit your individual needs. However, instructors in your other technical courses will expect written work to meetthese minimum criterion.Problem Solving Criterion forEngineering TechnologyType of paperIt is very common in engineering to use paper plain on one side with grid lines on the back. The rear lines are helpful in sketching since they are visible on the plain side. All work is done on the plain side of the paper. Only one side may be written on. The paper is lined with margins and a header section. Using engineering paper may seem demanding at first, but your purpose in school is to learn good work habits and skills that will serve you through your technical career. It is best to do things "by the book" now and adjust to "company policy" on the job.HeadingsEach paper should be numbered in the upper right hand to indicate the page and the total number of pages (1/3 2/3 3/3). Each paper should hold additional information as needed, such as, course number, your name, etc. In this class the information is as follows:First heading block: DateSecond heading block: Student's nameThird heading block: Course title or Course numberFourth heading block: Assignment descriptionFifth heading block: Page numberWriting InstrumentWork must be done in pencil so that you can erase small errors. Use a number 2B pencil.LetteringAny reasonable style of lettering may be used. It is best to print. Use a style typical of that used in drafting. Use care but sketch, don't draft. Also check for spelling errors! There is no excuse for spelling errors except carelessness. Would you by a house from a careless contractor?Problem LayoutEach problem should be stated fully at the top of the paper. This may involve only copying the words from the text or it may involve the formulation of a verbal description of a situation.State all givens and assumptions.Include all diagrams used. If more than one drawing is used for a problem, label them as Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.Use symbols standard to the situationProblem Solving Criterion forEngineering TechnologyAlways include a unit with the final answer, such as feet, inches, cubic yards, etc.State all equations or formulas used. Give a reference if possible. Show all important steps from the given equation to the final answer. Underline the final answer with a single or double line. Color is also helpful.Format for filling in the heading sections on the Engineering Paper:STUDENT NAMEDATE COURSE NUMBER CHAPTER PAGEPage
