Course Description: Math 0320. Intermediate Algebra. (3:3:1) This course is designed for the student who needs MATH 1314 or 1324. It includes factoring, fractions, linear equations in one unknown, graphs, systems of linear equations, exponents, radicals, and quadratic equations. Time in a math lab is required. This course will not satisfy graduation requirements. Textbook: Elementary and Intermediate Algebra, (2nd Edition), by Sullivan, Struve, and Mazzarella (2010), Pearson Education, Inc.: Upper Saddle River, NJ. Calculator: You will be required to purchase a scientific calculator for this course. Graphing calculators are allowed, however when using a graphing calculator, all work must be shown. The TI 83 –Plus or TI 84-Plus will be used in class for some applications. Calculators will not be allowed on certain topics. Attendance: Attendance and effort are the most important activities for success in this course. Attendance will be taken at every class period. Students that arrive more than 15 minutes late, or leave more than 15 minutes early will be considered absent for that day. Students that sleep during class or do not participate in class or lab activities will be counted as absent. Students that are talking during class will be asked to leave and will be counted as absent. Students that are texting during class may be asked to leave and will be counted absent. Any student that misses four consecutive classes or five cumulative classes will be dropped with a grade of X or F. Once the deadline for dropping a class is reached (see important dates), students with 5 absences or more will be assigned a grade of F when final grades are submitted. If a student is dropped for attendance reasons, he or she should not expect to be reinstated! Students new to college as of Fall 2007 may be dropped with a U, at the registrar’s discretion. (Absences are not considered excused or unexcused. They are just recorded as absences.) If a student has missed class 2 times or less and has an overall average of at least 85 after the fourth exam, he or she is exempt from the final exam. Tardies are included in this count. Two tardies = one absence.Grading: The final grade for this course will be determined in the following way: Exam 1 = 16% Exam 2 = 16% Exam 3 = 16% Exam 4 = 16% Final Exam = 16% Daily Average = 20% Final grades will be assigned by the following scale: A = 100 – 90 B = 89 – 80 C = 79 – 70 D = 69 – 60 F = 59 – 0 All work for this class MUST be done in pencil. Any work that is done in pen will be assigned a grade of 0. All exams will be returned in class for your perusal, then will be collected and kept on file. Major Exams: There will be 4 major exams and a final exam. The final exam will be comprehensive. Tentative dates for the exams will be on the calendar attached to this syllabus. Exams MAY NOT be made up, therefore, you should make every effort to be in class on exam days. If you are absent on the day an exam is given, you will receive a grade of 0 for that exam. At the end of the semester, the final exam grade will be used to replace the grade for one missed exam. A student who misses no exams has the option of using the final exam grade in place of his or her lowest exam grade. If the final exam grade is higher than any of the four exam grades, it will be used in its place. If the final exam is the lowest exam grade, it will count only once in the grade average. Daily Grades: Daily grades may be determined in the following ways. 1. Quizzes - There may be quizzes given in class over the previous day’s lesson. No books or notes allowed. There occasionally may be quizzes given via MyMathLab. If given online, there will be a time deadline that must be met. Any work not done by the deadline will receive a grade of 0. 2. MyMathLab Homework – Homework problems from each section will be assigned and completed using MyMath Lab. These assignments may be done as many times as needed to achieve the desired grade. There will be a time deadline that must be met. Any work not done by the deadline will receive a grade of 0. MyMathLab: A portion of the grade for this course is based on problems worked online via MyMathLab. The book/MyMathLab packet is sold as a bundle at the SPC bookstore. Things you will need in order to register: •E-mail Address: Any email address will work (school or personal) •Student Access Code: In your Access Code Packet •Instructor’s Course ID: To be announced on the first day of class •SPC Zip Code: 79336Follow these steps for a painless registration procedure: •Go to http://pearsonmylabandmastering.com and click the Register button. •Follow the on-screen instructions to enter the Student Access Code and the Instructor’s Course ID, provide contact information, and create a Login Name and Password.
