Intermediate Algebra (MATH 0320) SyllabusInstructor: Jason Groves Office: M107 (Levelland)Office Hours: MW: 1:30 - 3PM, TR: 10 - 11:30AM, F: 9am-Noon, or by appointmente-mail: [email protected]: 806-716-2739Prerequisites: one year of high school algebra and an adequate score on the Accuplacer orTHEA.Materials: Elementary and Intermediate Algebra 2nd Ed. by Sullivan, Struve, Mazzarella. Suit-able writing instruments and paper for taking notes and completing assignments. Calculators willnot be permitted in the course.Course Description: This course is designed for students who have had beginning algebra (ei-ther in high school or MATH 0315), and who wish to develop the fundamentals necessary to takeMATH 1314 or MATH 1324. This course does not satisfy a graduation requirement.Expected Learning Outcomes: At the end of this course, students should be able to compe-tently perform the following:• write equations of and graph linear equations• solve systems of equations• translate and solve word problems• graph and solve systems of inequalities• factor polynomials and solve polynomial equations (review)• simplify rational expressions• simplify radical expressions• perform operations on complex numbers• solve quadratic equations by the square root method and the quadratic formulaIT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO BE FAMILIAR WITH SOUTHPLAINS COLLEGE POLICIES. BELOW ARE ITEMS SPECIFIC TO THIS COURSEAssessment: Grading will be done according to the standard 10 percent scale (i.e. 100% - 90%is an A, etc.) with assignments weighted according to the following scaleHomework 25%Participation 25%Tests 30%Final Exam 20%Class Attendance: Students are responsible for the material covered in this course. A studentmissing two consecutive weeks of classes or 6 individual class days will be dropped from the course.A grade of X will not be issued in this course. Please note that new state laws only allow for 6withdrawn courses total.Homework: Homework will take the form of online homework given through MyMathLab, aswell as any unfinished worksheets done in class. Homework is to be of collegiate quality: neat,legible, all work shown, without ragged edges, and multiple pages are stapled.Participation: Participation consists of attendance, in-class assignments, and quizzes. Quizzeswill be given as necessary, and will be based on concepts and problems recently discussed. Questionswill come from important definitions and properties covered and/or examples done in class.Exams: There will be at least three midterm exams given during this course. Questions maybe similar to assigned homework problems or quiz questions. During exams cell phones, iPods (orother mp3 players), laptops, and other such objects should be turned off and put away. There isno tolerance for violations. Makeup exams are not given.Final Exam: The final exam is comprehensive, and a required part of the course. Failure to takethe final exam results in an automatic F. The final exam for this course is Monday, December 12,1 - 3 PM.Civility in the classroom: Students are expected to assist in maintaining a classroom environ-ment that is conducive to learning. In order to assure that all students have an opportunity to gainfrom time spent in class, troublesome behavior will not be tolerated. At a minimum, this includesuse of cell phones, making offensive remarks, reading newspapers, arriving late, leaving early orengaging in any other form of distraction. Food and drink are not permitted in the classroom.Honesty: “Scholastic dishonesty” includes but not limited to cheating, plagiarism, collusion,falsifying academic records, misrepresenting facts, and any act designed to give unfair academicadvantage to the student. Incidents of academic dishonesty will be promptly reported and dealtwith.Campus Resources: Students have access to tutoring in M116 on the Levelland campus, orBuilding 8 on the Reese campus. M116 also has instructional videos available. Videos and chatsupport are also available on MyMathLab.ADA Compliance: Any student who, because of a disability, may require some special arrange-ments in order to meet course requirements should contact Disability Services (formerly SpecialServices) at 806-716-2529 (Levelland) or 806-885-3048 ext 4675 (Reese).
