~ 1 ~ South Plains College Spring 2011 MATH 0320.206 TR 9:00 – 10:45 MATH 0320.208 TR 11:00 – 12:45 Instructor Information: Jacqueline Fowler RC 268 E (Reese Campus Building 2) 806-716-4640 Office hours are posted in Blackboard Course Description: This course is designed to prepare students for MATH 1314 or 1324. This course will not satisfy graduation requirements. Pre-requisite: MATH 0315 or one year of high school algebra. Course Topics: To successfully complete this course, you must master 70% of the following topics.  Write equations of lines.  Graph linear equations and systems of linear inequalities.  Solve systems of equations by graphing, addition, and substitution.  Translate and solve word problems using systems.  Factor polynomials.  Solve quadratic equations by factoring.  Simplify rational and radical expressions.  Add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational and radical expressions.  Add, subtract, multiply, and divide complex numbers.  Solve rational and radical equations. Materials/Supplies  Required: Scientific Calculator. Calculators on cell phones will not be allowed on tests.  Required: MyMathLab (MML) Student Access Kit. MML is free with the purchase of a new textbook at the SPC bookstore on either campus. You may also purchase online at www.coursecompass.com in which you will need a credit card and the Instructor’s Course ID (fowler50768).  Optional: Elementary and Intermediate Algebra by Sullivan, Struve, and Mazarella. The textbook is available in MML. Attendance Policy: Attendance and effort are the most important activities for success in this course. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to see a classmate to get the assignment and notes. If you have 4 consecutive absences or 6 cumulative absences, you may be dropped from this class and receive an X or F. If you wish to drop this class, you must complete the required steps with the Admissions office. Academic Integrity: It is the aim of the faculty of South Plains College to foster a spirit of complete honesty and a high standard of integrity. Please refer to the SPC General Catalog policy under “Academic Integrity” and “Student Conduct” regarding consequences for cheating and plagiarism. Tutoring: Free tutoring is available in building 8.~ 2 ~ Videos: There are videos in MML and Blackboard. To find extra tutorial videos in Blackboard that are not listed in our class, you need to log into Blackboard using the following information: Username: mvideos Password: mvideos Blackboard: Blackboard is the online course management system that will be used for this course. In Blackboard, you will find the course syllabus, announcements, videos, email, and other important information. To find Blackboard, go to the SPC homepage, and in the upper right hand corner of the screen, click on Blackboard or you can use this direct link: http://spc.blackboard.com. MyMathLab: Some math assignments are completed with a math software program called MyMathLab (MML). You can find a link in Blackboard or you can use this direct link: www.coursecompass.com. Homework: Homework assignments are located in MML under the “Homework” tab. Print out the section homework from MML and bring it to class so you can work on homework during lab time. Quizzes: Quizzes are located in MML under the “Quizzes and Tests” tab. You will only have 90 minutes to complete a quiz. You will get two attempts on a quiz, and the highest grade will be included in your average. At the end of the semester, one quiz grade will be dropped. Exams: Exams are located in MML under the “Quizzes and Tests” tab. We will meet in a computer lab on test days, and you will have 2 hours to take an exam. The final exam will be comprehensive. Extra Credit: Extra Credit is located in Blackboard. Grading Policy: HW Avg + Quiz Avg + Exam 1 + Exam 2 + Exam 3 + Exam 4 + Final Exam7 Grading Scale: Students with Special Needs: Students with disabilities, including but not limited to physical, psychiatric, or learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodations in this class should notify the Special Services Office early in the semester so that the appropriate arrangements may be made.
