INSTRUCTOR: Larry McBee OFFICE: Plainview Campus PHONE: W 296-9611 H 293-4068 OFFICE HOURS: 8:45 – 9:45 A.M. (M-F) E-MAIL: [email protected] South Plains College Improves Each Student’s Life I. GENERAL COURSE INFORMATION A. COURSE DESCRIPTION: MATH 0320.501 Intermediate Algebra. This course is designed for the student who needs MATH 1314 or 1324. It includes real number system, fractions, linear equations in one and two unknowns, graphs, sets, systems of linear equations, exponents, quadratic equations, rational expressions, and complex numbers. This course will not satisfy graduation requirements. B. GOAL OF THE COURSE: The goal of this course is to provide a student with a course in intermediate algebra as preparation for College Algebra. II. SPECIFIC COURSE/INSTRUCTOR REQUIREMENTS: A. TEXT: “Elementary and Intermediate Algebra” (2nd Edition), by Hutchinson, Bergman and Hoelze, McGraw Hill Publishers. B. CALCULATORS: A scientific calculator is required for this course. A graphing calculator will not be allowed during tests. C. SUPPLIES NEEDED: A spiral notebook to accommodate all homework assignments. D. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance and effort are the most important activities for success in this course. Five absences is the maximum allowed.. E. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: The guidelines for academic integrity set forth in the current South Plains College catalog will be followed. F. ASSIGNMENT POLICY: Assignments will be made at each class meeting and should be worked in the spiral notebook. The homework practice is required in order to more fully understand each topic. Questions over these problems will be discussed at the beginning of each class meeting. G. GRADING POLICY: Your final grade will be figured according to the following percentages: Four major tests average – 50% Homework - 25% Final Exam - 25% The final exam grade (if it is higher) will be used to replace the lowest grade. A TEST OR QUIZ MISSED WILL COUNT AS ZERO. (see Make-Up Policy below) All graded papers MUST be done in pencil. GRADING SCALE: 100-90=A 69-60=D 89-80=B below 60=F 79-70=C H. MAKE-UP TEST POLICY: If a student is absent when a major test is Given, the student will receive a grade of zero for the test. At the end of the semester, the student will be allowed to replace ONE missed major test grade with the grade on the final exam. A second missed test will be averaged as a zero. The final exam will also be averaged with the other test scores and homework to determine a student’s semester grade. I. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITES: 1. Attend class and be aware of announcements made in class. 2. Inform instructor of late arrival immediately after class. 3. Work homework problems early enough to seek help if needed and work extra problems as required to understand. 4. Be familiar with the syllabus, especially attendance, grading and test policies. 5. Take care of personal needs before and after class. 6. Keep all electronic devices (pagers, cell phones, etc) in mute or off mode. J. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITY ACT STATEMENT: Students with Disabilities, including but not limited to physical, psychiatric or learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodations in this class should notifythe Special Services Office early in the semester so that the appropriate arrangements may be made. In accordance with federal law, a student requesting accommodations must provide acceptable documentation of his/her disability to the Special Services Coordinator. For more information, call or visit the Special Services Office in the Building 8, Room 811 of Reese Center, 806-885-3048 extension 4675. K.
