April 2, 2013Fiction By: Robert Nozick- Is it possible that we are all some sort of fictional characters?o We would feel like we were in a work of non-fiction because everything appears to be real to us.- No creation ex. Nihilo you can’t create something out of nothing o Everything in existence must come from something. No spontaneous generation.o Whatever is in the effect must be present in the cause You can’t put a cheese pizza in the oven and get a pepperoni pizza when it’s done Two blue eyed parents (recessive trait) cannot have a brown eyed baby o God created everything by word, “Let there be____” Was there light, etc . in the word? Nozick argues that words can only create words nothing else so we are merely a story authored by godo If we are created by a good force (be it god or Steven king) why does evil exist? An author can write anything he/she wishes so they can be all good but still write a story of evil The story written doesn’t tell us what the author really is (good/evil)o Does the author control the story or does he learn about the characters as the story progresses? Brings up the question of free will If you think about a recurring character in a movie/tv show they sort of take on alife of their own At some point in time characters develop in certain ways the author cannot do whatever they want with themo Anomalies, Coincidences, etc. We have the idea that “real life” is more cohesive than a fictional story. “Real life” isn’t filled with all these coincidences. Sometimes it really is though. - TRUTH IS STRANGER THAN FICTIONo Is it possible that we a story (fiction) within a story (fiction)?
