John’s doctor initially thinks that John is just on drugs but after John insists that he is not the doctor assumes it is just exhaustion.4. John experiences the ‘tearing’ of his own world and then total darkness5. He hopes that eventually the will start dreaming his reality again.Life after LifeThomas D. Davis1. He thought it was really strange and hard to get used to but at the same time very interesting. 2. He has his sight and hearing but doesn’t have any other senses.3. He finds this puzzling because he feels like he is ‘there’ and should be able to move these objects.4. He was just talking, looking for someone to communicate with and eventually someone talked back. 5. Charlie is bored with his afterlife because he is no longer concerned much with his family and previous life but there’s nothing he can really do in his state except float around and observe things. NOTES- REREAD ALL SHORT STORIES & GO AND DO ALL READING QUESTIONS (ITS WHAT IS ON TEST)- Why Don’t You Just Wake Up?o A college student named john is taking a philosophy class studying Descarteso Descartes1600’s French philosopher; first of the modern era philosophers, his true love though was mathematics(created Cartesian plane geometry) Mentioned that he believed so many things as a child that he now knows aren’t true (santa etc.) because you discover a piece of information that ‘pops the bubble’ and you realize what you used to believe was wrong Senses were under a constant barrage of sensory input so if you can trust thatyour senses are 100% reliable than everything you perceive must be real BUT weusually cannot trust our sense 100% so how do we know the world is how we perceive it. There are conditions that cause your senses to be wrong.- There is an obstruction or something of that sorto Too far away to see you, optical illusion, etc.- You’re crazy and are experiencing things that aren’t actually happeningo You think that your head is made of pumpkins (lol)- You’re dreamingo When you’re dreaming you experience things that you believe are real at that timeo Can you prove that you woke up and aren’t still dreaming - Life After Lifeo Charlie dies choking on a fishbone but his soul stays ‘conscious’ o Lost all senses except for sight and hearingo Charlie raises a good question: how does thinking about something lead to your body doing it? Why can’t he just think about making something float and have it float? Descartes says that the pineal gland is the ‘docking station’ for your mind-bodyo Charlie initially goes and observes lots of different things amusing himself(baseball game, evesdropping, etc) o Charlie grows quite tired of this because he can observe everything but can’t do anything about it He is also disappointed in what he finds his friends/family doing when they don’t know he’s around o Decides he needs to make friends with some other disembodied souls To do this he just starts dropping in on philosophy lectures and is disappointed with no results Next, he just kind of shout things in his mind to try and contact somebodyo Meets Mildred who he can never see or physically interact with only talk too Charlie doesn’t like Mildred to much so he leaves and ends up meeting Alice Alice is boring but he stays with her for a while because he saw a pic of her and she was pretty hoto Charlie eventually leaves her because she is
