May 2, 2013Strange BehaviorThomas D. Davis1. They used a translating computer of sorts and had them identify different objects into themachine to match them up to our language2. The visitors were quite surprised with the fact that the Gammas treated the robots as equals.3. Mr. A doesn’t have a mind so he cannot possibly imagine having a mind.4. This phrase translates into “I behave, therefore I exist”5. Yes, the narrator does pity the Gammas because they don’t have a mind and don’t understandwhat a mind/what being ‘conscious’ is.NOTES- Story takes place in about 2100, earthlings have mastered space travel and have gone to the planet Gama which is approx. 50 yrs. in the past except with a profound knowledge of robotics - How do we compare an alien begin to us?o Physical appearance o Communicationo Behaviors - they first came into contact with the robots that the Gammas built, which are slightly different than the Gammas that are ‘alive’o The gammas sent the robots out first because the robots would be better combatants if the humans were just there to kill them- The Gammas sometimes claim that they are jealous of the robots at timeso Better memoryo Easily repairedo stronger- The Gammas treat the robots as equals o When the humans ask why the gammas are confused, the humans explain that we (humans) normally give preference over things that have emotions, feelings, A MINDo They soon discover that gammas as well as their robots don’t have minds- The Gammas and even the robots act (behave) like humans so are they essentially humans?o Humans say that they must have a mind to be uso Humans can’t give a description of what a mind/soul actually is because without one its very hard to think about- Importance of ‘mind’:o To humans it’s important that they have a mind and the gammas/robots don’t o To the Gammas/robots they don’t see any real difference because they have no ‘mind’- Gamma’s still respond the same way humans respond to stimuli but they don’t actually feel whatwe feelo Gammas and robots have pre-programed responses like car alarms to different stimuliFINAL EXAM NOTES- 55 questionso 40 questions over first 3 readings (montaine,Clifford,haslanger)o Last 3 (short stories) 15 questions- Normal exam during finals week- @ 3:00 on Monday (5/6) in the same room- Will be in office around 1 PM
