Social Science Secretary: Brigida Banfelder PH: 623-845-3685 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to acquaint students with the study of social behavior and human groups. Students will learn the fundamentals concepts of sociology, sociological terms, and the various ways humans interact within society’s institutions. We will examine the impact of social behavior and resulting behavior of people and groups. Human groups include families, crowds, gangs, cults, and formal organizations. All of these groups influence the behavior of its members and of other groups with which they come in contact. Also included in the study of sociology is the study of inequalities that we find in society due to race, gender, age, and the different means of changing the social order to eliminate such inequalities. From the text we will cover chapters: 1 – 4, 6,7,10, and 16. CHANGES TO THE SYLLABUS MAY BE MADE THROGHOUT THE SEMESTER. THE CHANGES WILL BE ANNOUNCED IN CLASS. The focus of this class will be on LECTURE, CLASS DISCUSSION, and IN-CLASS PROJECTS. There will be quizzes every week. Chapter test will consists of fifty multiple-choice questions or less. Quizzes and in-class projects will consists of short answer and essay You will have one week to make-up a chapter test. There are no make-ups on quizzes or in-class projects. Students! All assignments require a PEN, or PENCIL, or must be TYPED. Color pens or pencils are not acceptable.LATE ASSIGNMENTS: I will exercise two options regarding your late work. 1. I will not accept it. 2. Your LATE WORK will reflect a two-letter grade drop. GRADES: 100..90 = A 89.. 80 = B 79.. 70 = C 69.. 60 = D 59.. 50 = F FINAL EXAMS. You are required to take the final exam at the appointed time. If you fail to take the final, your grade is an “F”. ATTENDANCE: YOUR ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED. ATTENDANCE WIIL BE TAKEN AT EACH CLASS MEETING. You will be allowed two absences. You will be dropped on the third absence. Students will be counted absent when you do not spend the allotted time in class. SPECIAL NEEDS: If you have special needs, please discuss your situation with me so that I can assist you. RULES FOR SUCCESS: 1. Students who attend class and complete all assignments on time. 2. Students who prepare by reading materials and taking notes in class. 3. Students who listen and keep trying to succeed. REASONS WHY STUDENTS FAIL THIS CLASS: 1. Students who do not come to class. 2. Students who fail to get their materials (books, paper, pencils & pens). 3. Students who talk in class while instructor is speaking. 4. STUDENTS WHO EXPECT THE INSTRUCTOR TO INFORM THEM OF WORK MISSED. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO KEEP UP. 5. Students who expect to be entertained and do not listen. 6.
