Outline of TopicsCourse Syllabus Instructor: Lionel (Lee) St. Pierre Bus. Phone: 602-387-6186 Email: [email protected] Office Hours: By appointment only. Students are encouraged to see me if they feel they are beginning to have a problem with the course material or if they have any questions. Course Description: Sociology 101: Introduction to Sociology. 3 Credits Introduction to the fundamental concepts of social organization, culture, socialization, social institutions and social change. Prerequisites: None Required Text: Society, The Basics (7th Edition). Authors: John J. Macionis Objectives: This course is designed to help students learn the framework of Sociology, sociology terms, and the various Theories that try to explain the various ways humans interact with society and society’s institutions. We will explore the Sociological Theories that attempt to explain human behavior. In any course the main objective is to give the learner an opportunity to experience and learn up to her or his individual point of saturation. As an instructor, it is my objective to assist students along the way. Students will be able to identify, compare and contrast sociological experiences with life experiences and to discuss them in a sociological manner from what they have learned. Lectures: The lectures will focus mainly on the textbook and reading assignments. Discussions based on readings and lectures will be a part of class activities. Occasionally we will have a guest lecturer who will give you an in-depth look at special topics such as The Environment, Family Structure, Aging, etc. Exams: Exams will be worth 100 points each. There will be three (3) exams and 2 short papers (6 – 8 pages) worth 50 pts each required in this course. The exams will be multiple-choice. Make up exams will be given to students with a VALID reason for missing an exam (reason for missed exam must be accompanied by a Doctor’s note or a note from your employer) and will depend on the instructor’s availability. Grading: Total points Available equals 400 – A=360 or more, B=320 – 359, C=280 – 319, D=240 – 279, E=239 or less. If your total points are LESS THAN 240 points, you will have a Failing grade. Total points available is computed by adding 100 points possible for each exam plus the 50 points possible for each paper. I will always have your current grade available so if you are in doubt as to what your grade is in the class, just ask me and I will be happy to tell you. Attendance Policy You are adults (and I am not a truant officer) so it is up to you to decide whether or not to attend class. I will take attendance during the semester.Cheating: Cheating will not be tolerated in this class and will be Formally dealt with (will automatically result in being dropped from the course, plus whatever other form of academic discipline that GCC may impose). Examples of cheating are plagiarism and cheating on an exam (these are only two examples – other forms of cheating are also subject to disciplinary action). If you have any doubts about what may be considered cheating, please check with me. Disability Statement: The College will make reasonable accommodations for persons with documented disabilities. Students should notify Student Services and their instructors of any special needs.
