Macionis Edition: 13th No prerequisites COMPETENCIES: 1. Define sociology and explain how it differs from other social sciences. 2. Name and briefly describe the importance of selected major theorists to the field of sociology. 3. Define the basic sociological concepts: culture, society, socialization, social structure, groups, and institutions. 4. Describe values and norms, including mores, folkways, and laws. 5. Describe societal and structural factors that can influence individual behavior. 6. Describe sociological/psychological theories as they relate to the development of the self. 7. Describe the influence of selected institutions on society and the individual. 8. Describe the effect of race/ethnicity, sex/gender, and age on social inequality. 9. Explain major sociological perspectives on social class. 10. Explain how conflict, functionalist, and symbolic interactionist theoretical perspectives view deviance and conformity. 11. Describe and explain social change, including the influence of collective behavior, social movements, and demographic factors. PROMOTING A POSITIVE LEARNING ENVIROMENT. As an instructor, I am expected to be professional, courteous, respectful, and empathetic to students-and to: • Begin and end the class on time.2 • Be prepared for each class • Provide academic feedback and grade assignments in a timely fashion. • Be available for individual consultation. • Clarify assignments and inform students of any adjustments to the class schedule. As a student, you are expected to be reflective, courteous, respectful, and empathetic to classmates, instructor, and other College staff assisting you in learning-and to: • Be in class on time. • Be prepared for class. • Participate in class activities (No texting, e-mailing, phone calls, instant messaging, no internet sites unless directed by your instructor.) • Follow instructions and complete assignments. • Keep up with and turn in your assignments by the due dates. • Ask questions when you don’t understand. • Put forth your best effort. • Maintain knowledge of your grade status. • Contact instructor right away about concerns or situations that interfere with your success in the class. • Comply with policies found in the College catalog and student handbook, particularly the Student Code of Conduct. *This Syllabus statement acknowledges the work done on Positive Learning by Scottsdale Community College. STUDENTS SHOULD HAVE A LIBRARY CARD AND KNOW HOW TO ACCESS THE LIBRARY ON LINE AS WELL AS HOW TO USE THE LIBRARY IN PERSON. GO TO REGISTRATION TO GET A CARD. IN ADDITION, ALL STUDENTS NEED TO LEARN HOW TO ACCESS BLACKBOARD AS ANNOUNCEMENTS AND UPDATES WILL BE POSTED THERE. HELP IS ABAILABLE AT THE INFORMATION COMMONS. Calendar updates will be released as needed on blackboard. Important dates are contained with in this syllabus. ASSIGNMENTS: Students, this is college and papers are to be written at a collegiate level. All written assignments are to be typed or processed, double-spaced, and in a size 12 font that is easily read. (I prefer Times New Roman or Arial) Any work using a font that is difficult or tedious to read will not be accepted. Essays will require properly written references. This does not have to be a separate page and may be placed at the end of the essay. Use a heading as a separator from the body of the work. The reference must be either APA or MLA style. In-text references are required. If it is referring to a work other than the class text or class notes, a full in text, academic reference is required. If the reference is from the required text, the page number is sufficient (p. 38). The class note reference will look like this, (notes, 08/21). If you are unsure how to properly write a reference page or do an in text citing, go to the on campus services located in Estrella Hall in the Information Commons/Learning Enhancement & Writing Center. All written assignments will have a proper heading that includes name, class day, course, date, and assignment label.3 In addition, multiple pages must be initialed, numbered, and stapled or clipped. Try using a header or footer! The Writing Center The Writing Center offers students appointments to discuss their writing: assignments, prewriting, résumés, taking essay tests effectively, general study skills, etc. Any writing in any class is fair game. For evening and weekend students and GCC North students, GCC also offers the Electronic Writing Center on the Web In addition, ACE Plus has similar and enhanced services. Technology help is available 24/7. Check the GCC WEB site for information. LATE ASSIGNMENTS: Assignments are due at the beginning of the class. DO NOT LEAVE ASSIGNMENTS OR MESSAGES IN THE ADJUNCT or ACE OFFICE. DO NOT E-MAIL YOUR WORK. Should the instructor cancel a class on the day the assignment is due, it will be collected at the beginning of the next scheduled class time. NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THE END OF THE CLASS IN WHICH IT WAS DUE. DO NOT EMBARRESS YOURSELF OR ME BY ASKING TO HAND IN A LATE ASSIGNMENT. CHAPTER RESPONSES: WEEKLY (SAMPLE AT THE END OF SYLLABUS) Chapter responses are due at the beginning of the first class of the week. A chapter response is two (2) comments or questions, at least 1 paragraph long, directly derived from and/or related to reading the chapter and then support your comment or answer your question with some form of academic research, at least 1 paragraph in length, from the web, a newspaper, or any other academic source for a total of 4 paragraphs for each week. Each response should be a well written paragraph that fully explains your choice. Be sure that you note the chapter number for each week, the page number for each entry response, and the web address for each response or a reduction in credit will occur. Grading will be based on the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of the submission
