Mouth
The anterior opening to the intestine.
Salivary Glands
Lie beneath the crop. Connected to the salivary duct which opens at the base of the hypopharynx.
Pharynx
Short funnel-shaped portion of the digestive tract back of the mouth.
Esophagus
Short tube leading from the pharynx to the crop.
Crop
Posterior end of the esophagus widens into the thin-walled crop.
Gizzard (Proventriculus)
Behind the crop. Muscular walls. Lined with teeth or ridges.
Ventriculus (Stomach)
Relatively large simple tube.
Gastric Caeca
Blind-end tubes that open into the anterior part of the stomach
Malpighian Tubes
Hair-like tubes attatched at the junction of the stomach and the ileum.
Anterior Intestine (Ileum)
Anterior division of the intestine which extends from the stomach to the colon.
Posterior Intestine (Colon)
Short, narrow portion connecting the ileum to the rectum.`
Rectum
Posterior division of the intestine which collects undigested waste material before expeled from the body.
Anus
Posterior opening to the intestine
Brain
Large ganglion in the head which innervates the antennae and eyes, and coordinates the avtivites of the insects.
Subesophageal Ganglion
Small ganglion below and behind the brain, which innervates the mouthparts.
Thoracic Ganglia
Large ganglion located in each of the thoracic segments.
Commissures
Nerves which connect the ganglia.
Ovaries
Paired, cylindrical, tapering masses, composed of groups of tubes called ovarioles in which eggs are formed.
Oviducts
Tubes leading posteriorly from the ovaries to the vagina.
Vagina
Central duct through wich eggs pass before being deposited.
Spermatheca
Sperm receptacle. A pouch, opening dorsally into the vagina.
Accessory Glands
Tubes of a glandular nature which lie at the anterior end of the oviducts
Testes
Paired groups of sperm tubes which lie in the upper front region of the abdomen.
Vasa Deferentia
Ducts leading from the testes to the ejactulatory duct.
Simenal Vesicles
A group of tubes which open into the ejaculatory duct.
Accessory Glands
Glandular pouches (modified seminal vesicles) which open into the ejaculatory duct.
Ejaculatory Duct
Central exit tube of the genital system.
