Ch.9—Health and Body IssuesCurrent Lecture The definition of “healthy” is very subjective  Wellness: the new health goal  Dimensions of wellness Physical wellness (ex. Being able to climb up the stairs, appropriate body temp) Emotional wellness (*you need 21 points of physical contact a day to be emotionally healthy)  Intellectual wellness (ex. Exams in school) Spiritual wellness Interpersonal and social wellness (ex. Facebook, etc.)  Stress and depression Roughly ½ of all college students reported feeling “so depressed that it was difficult to function”  Loss of interest in activities you used to enjoy  Lack of energy  Problems concentrating, remembering information, or making decisions  Problems falling asleep, staying asleep, or sleeping too much  Loss of appetite or eating too much  Thoughts of suicide or suicide attempts  Health/Wellness across time  1900s—pie chart of leading causes of death, other was the biggest b/c they didn’t know what was causing things back then, cancer was TINY (now cancer is 25% b/c we have become so good at cancer diagnosis)  Message—able today to diagnose way more b/c of our knowledge  Also, today there are safer workplaces, recognition of tobacco as bad, healthier moms and babies, vaccinations for childhood diseases, control of infectious disease, motor vehicle safety, fluoridation of drinking water, safe/healthier foods, family planning Pneumonia, tuberculosis and diarrhea/enteritis are no longer leading causes of deathThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. (majority)  About 44% (majority) of the people spending on Medcaid are blind and disabled  Elderly Medicaid spending—long term care is the most of Medicaid spending, aka nursing homes The poor is second to most for Medicaid spending  Those without insurance? National surveys show that primary reason people are uninsured is the cost of health insurance coverage About 1.5 million families lose their homes to foreclosure every year due to unaffordablemedical costs About 68% of those whole filed for bankruptcy had health insurance  For some: health care costs too much In 2014, annual premium (what you pay to have health insurance coverage) was $16,834for a family of 4. Who can afford insurance… Almost half the world’s wealth is now owned by just 1% of the population The wealth of the 1% richest people in the world amounts to $110 trillion. That is 65 times the total wealth of the bottom half of the world’s population The bottom half of the world’s population owns the same as the riches 85 people in the world.  Wealth – well-being  In the US, the wealthiest 1% captured 95% of post-financial crises growth since 2009, while the bottom 90% became poorer  Census poverty rate In 2013, the official poverty rate was 14.5 percent, down from 15 percent in 2012. This was the first decrease in poverty rate since 2006. In 2013, there were 45.3 million people in poverty Clarke County In Athens, poverty rate is 34.9% Meaning, 35% of your fellow Athenians have substantially low incomes Census poverty data Poverty rate in children in 2012 for under age 18 was 21.8 percent  Poverty rate for people age 18-64 was 13.7 percent
