Assignment 2: Anxiety Case Study = “Lucinda”For this assignment, you should read the case study below, regarding “Lucinda”, a college student presenting with anxiety symptoms. After you read the case study, answer the questions at the end. Your paper must be typed, and is due by 5pm on Monday, October 6. Case Study:Background InformationLucinda is a 21 year-old college student, who is majoring in business. She is planning to graduate in May. Lucinda reports that she earns good grades, and she is in interested in obtaining an MBA in the future. She is involved in several clubs on campus, and plays on an intramural softball team. Presenting ProblemLucinda is in the process of applying for jobs and preparing for interviews. She has sought help because “I’m afraid that I’m going to freak out during an interview and thennot get hired.” Lucinda explains that approximately six weeks ago, she was in her finance class taking an exam when she became “really anxious.” Lucinda reports that she began trembling and sweating, and “felt like I was going to pass out, right there in class.” She left the classroom, and sat in the hallway in an attempt “to calm down, so I could finish the test.” Although she reports being embarrassed that she walked out while the test was still being administered, Lucinda notes, “I didn’t have a choice – I didn’t want people to think I was flipping out, but I was afraid maybe I was going crazy – my heart was beating a million miles a minute and I felt like I couldn’t catch my breath. I was like, what if I’m dying? What if I drop dead right outside of my finance class?!” Lucinda reports that the episode lasted about 20 minutes, and when it ended, she went back into the classroom and spoke to the professor, who allowed her to finishthe exam at a later date. Lucinda noted that it was difficult for her to return to class the next day, however she has been attending class regularly since the episode. Lucinda reports that since that initial episode, she has had several other similar experiences. “It happened again, about a week later, when I was studying in the library. I was doing my Accounting homework, then I got to a problem I didn’t understand. All of a sudden, I started to sweat, and my heart started going real fast, and I thought I was going to throw up.” Lucinda notes that she stood up, feeling dizzy and hot, but found the strength to leave the library, and return home to her apartment.Lucinda reports that the most recent episode occurred approximately three weeks ago, when she was attending an organizational meeting for the Softball league in which she plays. “The meeting was really boring, and so I was just looking around the room, and again, my heart starts pounding like crazy, and I’m sweating, and shaking like a leaf. I was so embarrassed! No one seemed to notice, but I ran out of the meeting, and it took about 15 minutes to calm down. Now I know I must be going crazy, or that something is really wrong with me.”Lucinda notes that she has been “thinking constantly” about the episodes since the firstone occurred. She describes herself as “kind of a worrier in general” who often puts pressure on herself to excel in her school work and activities. She states that in the past, she has felt concern about her achievements, but “no more than anyone else does, and it never freaked me out like this situation does!” Lucinda reports that she “worries all the time” that she will have another episode, and that “if I’m not crazy, then I have some weird medical condition, and I need to be in the hospital.” Lucinda reportsthat she still continues to attend class, her clubs and play in her softball league, but that she “doesn’t participate as much as I used to, and I don’t have as much fun as Idid before.” Lucinda notes that she calls her mother regularly to receive reassurance, “that I’m okay,” Answer the following questions:1. What Anxiety Disorder diagnosis would you give to Lucinda?Lucinda most likely has agoraphobia. 2. Describe how she meets each criteria for the disorder (you must match her symptoms to the criteria for the disorder!)She is afraid she is going to freak out during her interview. She also explains that she became really anxious and felt like she was going to pass out while she was taking a finance exam. The main thing that distinguishes this from other disorders is that she reported feeling embarrassed after the panic attack. She also said that it was difficult for her to return to class the next day because she felt embarrassed. In addition to that she is constantly thinking about the first episode since it occurred. She then avoids the situations that cause her to have a panic attack aswell as not participating in activities as much as she had before. 3. What other Anxiety Disorders did you have to rule out? What symptoms did shedisplay that could meet criteria for another diagnosis? The following anxiety disorders can be ruled out: OCD and specific phobia. She does display symptoms of both Generalized anxiety Disorder and of social phobia. With GAD an individual has excessive anxiety and worry that occurs more days than not for at least 6 months. The individual typically has unrealistic, excessive worry and impairment in social and occupational functioning. This can be ruled out due to the timeframe. She does display most of the symptoms for social phobia. This is the experienced marked fear or anxiety focused on one or more social or performance situations. She appears to have these attacks during social situations however she experiences the fear the panic attack and then the embarrassment. If she had social phobia she would have the fear caused by the possibility of embarrassing herself and then a possible panic attack. 4. What suggestions do you have for treating Lucinda? To treat Lucinda, I would give her some form of medication. These include noradrenergic, sertonergic, and/or GABA-benzodiazepine neurotransmitters. Also to help treat panic attacks an individual should be gradual exposed to feared somatic sensations and try to modify perceptions and
