Organizational Behavior Chapter 2 Outline Organizational Culture The set of shared taken for granted implicit assumptions that a group holds and that determines how it perceives thinks about and reacts to its various environments OB is passed on to new employees through the process of socialization OB structure affects employees attitudes and behavior Layers of Organizational Culture o Observable Artifacts acronyms manner of dress published values decorations o Espoused Values explicitly stated values and norms that are preferred by an organization enacted are the values actually converted in employee behavior Employers need to reduce gaps between espoused and enacted values o Basic Assumptions values that have been taken for granted over time and have become assumptions that are highly resistant to change ex Google innovative Four Functions of Organizational Culture ex Southwest Airlines company culture 1 Give members an organizational identity ex Fun place to work 2 Facilitate collective commitment ex Dedicated to high quality service 3 Promote social stability performance based awards and holiday parties 4 Shape behavior by helping members make sense of their surroundings employees understanding why high quality service is a must Competing Values Framework Employees are more satisfied and committed to clan culture Innovation is increased with clan adhocracy and market cultures More positive outcomes with market cultures Organizational Socialization When a person learns the values of a company which permit them to participate as a member 3 phases to go from outsider to insider anticipatory encounter change and acquisition Know all socialization tactics from notes group vs individual formal vs informal pg 48 Mentoring Intensive and lasting developmental relationship Gives one acceptance and membership into an organization Diversity of developmental relationships high ties strong Connection of one s core values o Receptive weak ties one social system o Traditional strong ties one social system o Entrepreneurial strong ties diverse social systems o Opportunistic weak ties diverse social systems
