Criminal Justice and The Media Professor Sue Hannon February 18 2015 Exam 2 on Monday March 2 Subject Police Officers and Laws Police officers did not get paid very much and were uneducated during the Great Depression 20 s 30 s the police were portrayed as being stupid in the media 1950 s police were seen as the keepers of peace and this was also the beginning of police drama as we see today o Dragnet went from radio to television during this time o There were not a lot of regulations for police during this period 1960 s there was a lot of conflict between cops and citizens o Civil Rights Movement o Drugs became popular o War on Poverty 1963 was seen as a racial war o IMPORTANT Crime rate 1960 1968 rose 100 Murder Rape Aggravated Assault Robbery Larceny Burglary Auto Theft Arson not added until 1979 Democratic National Convention 1968 o Chicago Illinois Democratic Convention Group Yippies were an extremely radical liberal group They once took over Tom Sawyer s Island in Disneyland They threatened to put LSD in Chicago water supply The Mayor rounded up the police to instruct them to keep order and not let any marches get out of hand Democratic National Convention broadcasted on T V Huge riots broke out on television It appeared as if the police IMPORTANT 1960 s many Supreme Court Decisions were out of control Criminal Justice and The Media Professor Sue Hannon February 18 2015 o Mapp v Ohio Established the Exclusionary Rule If any evidence is found in violation of the 4th Amendment it will be excluded from the case Police must have probable cause to search a house with permission or with warrant o Escobedo v Illinois Suspects have a right to counsel during police investigation under the 6th Amendment This was to prevent any torture from the police that could force someone into confessing such as no water no sleep no food Attorney must be present during police line up This was to prevent police from influencing the person identifying the suspect Defendants are entitled to a defense attorney at any time a critical stage This is basically any time the suspect will appear in court o U S v Wade exists o Miranda v Arizona Probably most recognized case The Supreme Court determined that prior to questioning the police must warn a suspect of the right to remain silent
