CCJ 215 1st Edition Lecture 9Back in time; law enforcement- Peopled moved first then law then school. - There was little protection back then - The blue laws- the first few law were religion believes became laws o Ex: married couple can only have sex to create a kid o Ex: in Tucson woman can’t wear pants1920’s and 1930- Probations- cant consume alcohol - The great depression - 1935-the FBA Was created- to stop illegal activity of police officer and watch the governmento EX: they gave the police a few dollars to look away - Silent movie- portraying police as incompetent- they were worthless - Hollywood moved into addable – movies were about gangster- gave the police an unflattering image 1940’s- There was very little about law enforcement because the war- everything was about the war1950’s- The Television- everyone had it- The radio started the police drama o Dragnet – Hawaii Five-o – The untouchables - Then police drama became huge with TV’s - Police did not have regulations - The police did not follow the amendments just arrest them 1960’s- Communication between the public and law enforcement- The Vietnam War - The doves no to the war - the ducks support the war - DRUGS!!!- Woman right movement - The rate of illiteracy going up - President Johnson- the war of poverty- The crime rate in America rose 100% 1960- 1968o The crime rate in based on  Murder  Rape Aggravated assault  Robbery  Larceny (Theft) Burglary Auto theft  Arson-1979- so many crashes between police and civilian- 1968 the democratic national convectiono In Chicago o March for the end of Vietnam war o The group yippes They threated to put ALS in the water  went into Disney and took over tom sawyer island  officer were told to keep the peace - The convection- 1968- was on the TV o There were big fight o It showed the police out of control o Number of criminal cases to the supreme court Example of cases - Mapp v. Ohio o Established the Exclusionary Rule If any evidence is found in violation of the Fourth Amendment, it will be excluded from the case - Two ways to get searched - Someone giving permission - A warrant - U.S v Wadeo Defendant are entitled to a defense attorney at any time a critical stage exist  Long history of torcher to confess “I confess to the crime” - No bathroom - Don’t go to sleep - No water- No food - Miranda V. Arizona o Probably most recognized case The supreme court determined that prior to questioning, the police must warn a suspect of the right to remain
