Katie Fox Comm107 Section 8401 Informative Topic Pitch Please raise your hand if any of you have ever heard of Alzheimer s or know someone who has the disease I have always been interested in raising money to support organizations with find ing cures to diseases and my parents always taught me to help others but I was thankful to never have a personal connection to any diseases until last year Unfortunately my grand mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer s disease I am very close with my grandmother so this news hit me hard For those of you who do not know what Alzheimer s is it is progressive dis ease to ones mental state that can occur throughout one s life middle or old age A simpler defi nition would be that one starts to lose their memory of simple things very quickly After I under stood my grandmother had the disease it didn t hit me until she couldn t remember my name when I called her on the phone and she seemed to be having trouble with everyday tasks I de cided I was going to do something about the disease not only for my grandmothers sake but for anyone who is going through a rough time because a loved one has Alzheimer s After doing a lot of research I decided to create a team for the yearly Walk to End Alzheimer s and get as many people to participate as possible I had fundraising events and my team raised 2000 for the Alzheimer s association My grandmother is still struggling with the disease but I am contin uing to do whatever I can to help I decided to pass the tradition onto my younger sister to orga nize a team for the walk and I am planning to participate this year as well Many of you may still be thinking that s great but how does this pertain to me Alzheimer s disease can happen to people no matter what age because there is also early onset Alzheimer s which affects people under the age of 65 There is no cure for Alzheimer s so my goal is to inform as many people as possible about the disease learn more information about Alzheimer s and hopefully one day find a cure
