Katie Fox COMM107 Professor Erskine Who I Am Speech Past Present Future Growing up people would always ask me what do you want to be when you grow up Naturally I would answer with a response such as just like mommy and daddy Hearing stories told by my parents about the parts of my childhood that I was too young to remember were al ways funny or entertaining but each story ended with the simple understanding that I said some thing I should not have or constantly had my mouth moving As the years went on my answers to the simple yet complex question were constantly changing but one thing was for sure I never stopped talking When I was ten I dreamed of being a teacher working with children and help ing them learn Three years later I realized that I wanted to pursue a career as an Oncologist but that path did not work The summer before my freshman year here at the University of Maryland I was constantly getting asked what my major was going to be Having that question floating around in my brain made me realize that it was okay to go into college undecided but I was con stantly pondering what I actually wanted to do with my life Even though both of my parents own their own business s and I always had an interest in business I never saw myself as a busi nesswoman Even though most of my family members enjoy art and I think of myself as a cre ative individual I did not see myself doing artwork for the rest of my life Entering University of Maryland I had a lot of decisions especially choosing what classes I was going to take Signing up for a wide variety of classes I experienced a range of feelings for each class I confirmed my theory that math and science were not my expertise Eng lish seemed to come easily to me but my journalism classes were the courses I found most in triguing After having numerous meetings with journalism advisors I realized journalism was too specific making my decision to claim a major even more difficult than I imagined Day and night I was researching potential majors and I finally came across a major that was made for me communication studies I decided for my second semester I was going to sign up for communi cation classes and try something new yet something I seemed to be good at which is communi cating As the years go by there are always new questions to be asked So since you re a com munication major what kind of job are you going to get What are you going to do What will you do with that major and how do you expect to get internships and make a living off of com municating My honest answer is I m not entirely sure I don t know what career I am going to have and I am not sure if I will graduate with a major in communication but I do know that I en joy communicating with others as well as communicating with myself I hope that the future holds a job for me and that I will be successful in whatever I chose to do but I know that no mat ter what I do communicating will always be a key part of my life
