HIST 1312 1st Edition Lecture 26 Outline of Last Lecture I Work Relief Agencies A C C C B C W A C W P A and P W A II Reform Agencies A T V A B R E A III Recovery Agencies A N I R A B U S vs Schlecter Poultry C A A A Outline of Current Lecture I Supreme Court Packing Scheme II Alternatives to End the Great Depression A Huey Long Share Our Wealth B Gerald L K Smith C Dr Francis Townsend Father Coughlin III Social Security Act IV Wage and Hour Act Wagner Act Current Lecture l President FDR didn t like the old men on the Supreme Court because they did not vote in his favor So for every one justice who was over 70 he wanted to be able to choose another person for the Supreme Court people were angry at this so he had to back down from it ll A In Louisiana a school was on fire and when children tried to escape on the ladder escape it collapsed and killed some children So Huey Long decides to help the parents sue the contractor He wins and becomes the people s hero He became the governor of Louisiana and did everything he could for the poor person He then ran for President These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor s lecture GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes not as a substitute against FDR on his program Share the Wealth This program allowed millionaires to keep 1 million and the other gets taxed at 100 so they d lose 9 million This wealth would be redistributed and given 3 500 to poor people This program is Communism and Long gets shot by his mistresses brother B Gerald L K Smith was a pastor who would go to small churches and make them big His wife got sick so he took her to Louisiana His parishioners at his new church are behind on their mortgage so they ask the pastor for help The contractor said he could not give them an extension so Smith talks to Long and Long makes the contractor pay the rest of their dues himself Smith is impressed by this so he joins Long s program C Dr Francis Townsend is a geriatric physician who proposed a plan that people over 62 and older would retire and get a small pension a month so younger people could work He proposed that a small amount of income would be taxed and set aside for later so they could retire on this later Townsend Smith and Father Coughlin form their own political party to promote this lll FDR does not want to lose the election so he gets Congress to pass the Social Security Act Some people were against this because they now had to prove their ages and some did not have a birth certificate People could no longer run away somewhere else and change their name and now everyone was assigned a number lV The Wage and Hour Act was passed in 1937 which stated that employers must pay their employees extra whenever they worked over 40 hours So 60 hours drops to 40 hours and more people are hired this way The Wagner Act said that labor has the right to engage in collective bargaining
