The 18th amendment, ratified in 1919 was about prohibition. It prohibited the manufacture, sell, or transport of alcoholic beverages. (The 21st Amendment repealed These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.this). However people can make their own homemade beer and wine. The 19th amendment, ratified in 1920, gave women the right to vote. Men gave women this right because of their work as nurses, clerks, etc. during World War l.C. There were two Child Labor Acts. The first Act said that children under the age of 14 can’t work, Congress struck this down because many lower class families needed their children to work at a young age. So Congress made a second Act that said children under14 can’t work in inherently dangerous occupations like mines or dynamite manufacturing. Congress wanted more children to stay in school so it opens up jobs for adults.ll.A. The Mexican Revolution started because in 1910 90% of all Mexican land was owned by foreigners, and they wanted to redistribute the land to poor Mexicans, however the President of Mexico at this time, gave this land to his cronies. The next President is Indian and tries to get rid of the Mexicans so they come to America. Poncho Via comes into America and kills some Americans so President Wilson sends in the U.S. Expeditionary Force to kill Poncho Via and his forces but Mexico sees this as war with America so relations become strained between us.B. In 1914 war breaks out in Europe and the Panama Canal isn’t open until 1915. Haiti and the Dominican Republic are having uprisings and in Haiti it is really bloody. Wilson sendsin Marines to take over both these countries until the 1930’s because we feel like Germany might take over these deep sea ports in their countries so they can easily attack and destroy our Panama Canal before it is finished.C. Wilson also arranges for a Treaty with Nicaragua, because they have to secure the waterby Nicaragua so the Mexicans wouldn’t try and take it over. In 1916 we also put pressure on the Danish to sell us the islands in the Caribbean so Germany doesn’t take them over when they attack the Danish. So we rename them the U.S. Virgin Islands.lll.A. The background to World War l includes imperial ambitions especially with Britain and Germany coming into Africa. They made colonial colonies out of tribes that were forced together who hated each other, so when they lef Africa went back into war with each other. In 1914 imperial ambitions started to turn inward. B. In the 1800’s Napoleon built up one of the most professional armies ever seen and he built up a sense of French pride. A sense of pride in one’s nationality arises everywhere and if someone insults your country you get ofended easily.C. When Serbia gets its independence Russia sees itself as its protector because it is a Slavic country. So Serbia has a secret alliance with Russia who in turn has a secretalliance with France so they can attack Germany on both sides. The archduke of Austria-Hungary gets assassinated in Serbia so Germany forms a secret alliance with Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire, because they helped build their army up so the Ottoman Empire in turn, promised to side with Germany in a war. In the very beginning Italy was on Germany’s side but then they switched to Russia’s side, and when German troops started marching through Belgium, England comes in to protect them. In 1914 America declares
