Dean Katie Cory and Jack READ the summary below the outline if anything else Things in parentheses are notes to you guys The outline Our project will consist of activities that involve the other students a prezi or powerpoint presen tation and role play Our powerpoint presentation will be up throughout the presentation and changing slides accordingly Our sources will be shortly cited where we mention them and fully in APA format at the end We will also be including information from the textbook so students can follow along and have a general knowledge of the topic Everyone says their own names and Dean provides slight description of our topic and what to ex Introductions pect We are going to discuss communication in the workplace People tend to misinterpret informa tion given through digital conversations which can lead to bad habits of communication With out listening to tone voice and manner of speech people can misunderstand what one is trying to say to employees in the workforce II First half we show that there is a problem Role play activity we can switch the ordering which might be better This will consist of our group acting our various situations that can take place in the workplace with screenshots of the ambiguous email to visually show how it can be misinterpreted and an other version of the email that is the more correct version i lets have 2 3 role play scenarios which we list who is acting them out and what it consists of ii Dean boss Jack employee 1 Cory employee 2 Katie employee 3 the boss is sending out an ambiguous lets figure this out email and employee 1 thinks it s an angry email employee 2 thinks its a good email employee 3 does not understand the information and talks to both em ployees and gets mixed signals from both 2 This part we will ask thought provoking questions the sources should help with this i How could the boss have re worded his email to get his true point across will be asked before slides should help with this our correct email slide is shown ii Have you or a friend ever misinterpreted a text from someone that was drastically different from their intended attitude and if so how could this have been avoided iii Are there any definitive rules we can come up with to avoid interpretation errors in text based communication we may use caps lock to convey anger or frustration etc III Second half we show how this problem can be fixed We will take turns reading from our slides on how this can be fixed this half we focus more on reading the slides level of respect Being more clear and concise will eliminate any misinterpretations that could be perceived stating one s attitude or lack thereof can change the tone of the email or writing Face to Face meetings allow supervisors to convey their emotions in person and assert a certain Skype meetings rather than mass emails allow employees to receive information in a new form while not losing the emotional aspect of communication There is no overarching winner for new communication these scenarios should be dealt with on a case by case basis to assess which solution would best resolve the issue Video related to our topic Lets try to find a video B Our sources will be listed in the closing slides READ As a summary of what s needed below 15 min presentation it s a discussion not a lecture so we need to have some interaction with the other students and state how we do this in the outline We need 5 sources related to our topic in the outline we need to state where it is located which is probably in our powerpoint visual aid We need to assign roles for our role play this should not take up more then half of our time The first part we show how this is a problem then the second part we show how we can fix it An example https prezi com lmgb cefyl1k comm 107 group project lets not copy this tough also all we have to do now is the outline READ What were supposed to do Thorough If I cannot understand or basically anticipate what you will do from the outline it is not adequate If your label for a section is two words I probably won t know what you re saying You must use full clauses or sentences to provide sufficient detail Formal Use the classic Roman Numeral structure for outlines Researched Indicate in the outline where you are citing sources Follow the APA parenthetical reference format for this Clear about who is speaking I need to know who is doing what You need to plan in advance who will be responsible for what part Clear about what you re doing I need to be able to see in advance where you are incorporating activities and questions rather than just lecture I don t want to see a big list of information I need you to also provide explanations of the strategies you will use to engage your classmates Optional read This is what we are supposed to do for the actual discussion Work with your group members to prepare a 15 minute discussion on your communication topic You should not simply report your findings Instead you should create a dynamic discus sion that interweaves discussion and interactive activities Be creative as you design your discussion Consider using handouts partner activities role play exercises simulations small group activities surveys and visual aids It s okay to present some information directly but the majority of the time should be interactive For example You are trying to show us a problem in communication in a business So involve your classmates in a role play exercise in which they act out this challenge as a worker and their boss Or ask a series of thought provoking questions that help people realize how they play a part in this problem Give them reflection questions and so on This is a discussion not a lec ture Emphasize solving the problem The first part of your presentation should convince us that a problem exists the latter half should emphasize different approaches to solving it These solu tions might be individual Here s what you should go out and do attitudinal here s how NOT to think social here s how our society should work differently political policy here s how the government should pass a law about this and so on This is very open ended I just want you thinking pragmatically about how this problem can be overcome through effective commu nication ing about Finally you must have five academic sources that are properly cited This means taking a look around EBSCO Communication Mass Media Complete database or finding actual news arti cles I don t want anything from Yahoo Answers or
