learn about fad diets selecting foods of high nutrient density and identifying truths and non truths among advertised claims for food products Course Objectives Upon completion of NUTR 3100 the student will have knowledge of 1 How to meet nutrient needs with a well balanced diet 2 Nutrient metabolism 3 Tools for healthy eating 4 Role of food in promotion of a healthy lifestyle 5 Promotion of pleasurable eating 6 How to identify accurate nutrition information 7 Health promotion and disease prevention theories and guidelines 8 Influence of socioeconomic cultural and psychological factors on food and nutrition behavior 9 The basics of digestion 10 The different classes of nutrients and how the body utilizes them 11 Carbohydrates Fats and Proteins 12 Vitamins and Minerals 1 Grading The following grading breakdown is used Final Exam Quizzes 1st 40 points 6 quizzes 60 points each Discussion Introduce Yourself Discussion Fad Diet Syllabus Comprehension Activity Farmers Market Activity Objectives 1 Textbook Chapter Readings and PowerPoint notes You are responsible for learning the information that is contained in the textbook chapters and the PowerPoint notes as well as occasional videos 2 Quizzes Quizzes will be based on the material found in each week and in some cases the previous weeks assigned reading PowerPoint notes and occasional videos Please note that that the quiz content will be on everything covered since your previous quiz The quizzes must be submitted by 11 59 pm on the Sunday of the assigned week If you do not submit the quiz by the deadline you will not receive any credit for the quiz Also you will not be able to save a partially completed quiz and return to it later so plan accordingly before beginning a quiz Please keep in mind that Desire2Learn may conduct a scheduled maintenance which may affect your access to the quiz Scheduled maintenance sessions are NOT a justifiable reason for a late submission since you will have advance notice of any maintenance 3 Discussions There will be 2 discussions in this course As with the quizzes you must adhere to the deadlines by 11 59 p m on Sunday of the assigned week and again D2L maintenance sessions are not an acceptable reason for a late submission 2 4 Activities There are 2 activities and all are due by 11 59 p m on their respective due dates always a Sunday The Farmers Market activity will take time and cannot be done at the last minute so please review the requirements for this assignment in advance of the due date You may submit as far in advance as you choose Activities should be submitted using the Dropbox tool in Desire2Learn Do not email activities to me More information about each activity will be posted in D2L 5 Final Final Exam will be given online You may use your textbook notes and weekly assignments to complete the exams There will be no on campus exams Academic Honesty Students enrolled in NUTR 3100 must abide by the University Academic Honesty Policy This excuse for late submissions Do not wait until the last minute to complete your assignments or take your quizzes and exams 5 If you have problems with Desire2Learn you should contact GSU s Help Center Desk at help gsu edu I cannot solve technical problems with your computer or D2L 6 An emergency is just that an illness death in the family accident etc Loss of and or limited Internet connection and traveling vacations are NOT considered emergencies Please keep this turnaround time for emails in mind in light of the Sunday 11 59 pm deadlines for assignments 7 As this is an online course I understand that some of you may be traveling during this class and you may have limited access to the Internet Please note the assignments that are due on and around your travels and plan accordingly
