Katie Fox Comm107 Informative Briefing Self Assessment After watching my speech on Panopto I noticed some things that I have improved on since I started taking this class as well as aspects that I need to work on Through my speech I noticed certain strengths when giving a public speech such as my loud clear voice and my abil ity to incorporate my audience keeping them engaged by having steady eye contact and trying my best to not use my notecards as much as possible During my speech I stayed focus and orga nized making sure that my audience was able to follow along and understand all of the details I was covering about Alzheimer s I tried to speak slowly and clearly so my audience was able to follow everything I was saying especially because I know it is natural to speak faster when you are nervous Even though I do believe I am a decent public speaker there are some aspects of my speech that I can improve on For example some students recommended for my actual speech that I include more information about the brain activity with Alzheimer s and how one can cope in case they are going through a tough time with a loved one I took this advice and reflected on how I could improve I also felt as though I could have reviewed my powerpoint representation once or twice more before presenting but I think it is normal to always wish you could review a few more times before presenting information I also reflected on my preparation for my speech and even though I had notecards and I rehearsed what I was going to say I did not time myself and the speech had a time limit I think for the next speech I give I need to time myself when I practice to I can estimate how long my speech will be I thought my topic was informative and interesting because I gave a personal connection and I researched a lot of information about the disease For example when I spoke about my grandmother being diagnosed with the disease and some of the symptoms I found on reliable websites I started to see connections that were occurring to her and what was posted on national organizational websites For my next speech I know I need to consider different aspects of my speech and make sure that I can try to connect to my audience on a deeper level For example I could have given suggestions for people on how to deal with a loved one who has Alzheimer s Next time I prepare for a speech I am going to rehearse it in front of my room mate and see if she has any suggestions so I get another perspective on the topic I know I am fine with my actual speech and eye contact but I can always improve Next time instead of us ing multiple notecards maybe I can try using one notecard for important quotes or footnotes and rely on my research that I know in my head as well as certain points on my powerpoint to help me instead of flipping through multiple notecards in front of my audience I also recognized that I did not say as many oral footnotes as I should have which is something I need to work on be cause even though I had all of the credible sources in my notes I forgot to mention them when speaking to my audience This is significant because my audience needs to know that all of my sources are reliable and if they want to learn more information then I am giving them they can go to one of the sources that I mentioned to find out more information on the topic Overall I think I did a decent presentation because I felt comfortable talking in front of my audience Reviewing the rubric I got two points taken off for not mentioning two of my oral footnotes so I will make sure to correct that error for the next speech I give I worked hard on preparing and delivering my speech and I personally think that I showed that to my audience I also enjoyed getting automatic feedback from the audience because I could understand how they enjoyed or disliked my presentation and they gave their honest opinions I also liked using Panopto because I could hear myself speech and how I delivered the speech to my audience com pared to when I practice presenting my speech to one or two people
