primary Theories of Symbolic Interaction Human behavior is influenced by individual perceptions and the meanings people assign to various things Labeling Theory An intervention between the stimulus provided by the object and our response to it An individual s self identity and behavior of individuals may be influenced by the terms used to classify them Self fulfilling prophecy Stereotyping Social Constructionism The meanings we give things that arise out of social interaction We convert our experiences into images and symbols 3 Three components of Socially Constructing the World and how they relate to one another Language enables us to transmit culture not only in the present but also from past and future generations Sharing beliefs thoughts and feelings with others is the basis of culture and language makes this possible Our conduct is based upon the culture we live in Socialization Socialization As we are born into society we are bombarded with symbols that define who we are Primary The world we are born into socialization at home Secondary The position that we are placed into i e school media larger structures Alternations Different identifications of the self 4 What is the social order interaction order and how do we know about these invisible rules Social Order A set of linked social structures social institutions and social institutions which conserve maintain and enforce ways of relating and behaving Non biologically mandated socially constructed 5 What are Islands of meaning and how they are constructed understood and what results from our ability to create them Islands of meaning are meaningful entities with distinctive identities that surround us Construction occurs by lumping similar items together in a single mental cluster and at the same time separating in our mind different mental clusters from one another creates a mental void between islands Social scalpel is our ability to break things up when we already know the context Rules of Irrelevance Selective Attention helps specify which differences are salient for differentiating entities from one another and which ones are only negligible differences among variants of a single entity Ignoring differences that make no difference involves some social pressure to disregard them Leads judges doctors and professors to display affective neutrality 6 What is Speed Culture and our newly acquired Speed Logic Faster is better in a speed culture Going with the flow and continuing to remain grateful for those commodities which assist us in performing at full capacity is referred to as speed logic 7 What is the Paradox of Choice and what are its four core implications The paradox of choice implies that as more choices become available decisions become more difficult Regret and Anticipated Regret Opportunity Costs Escalation of Expectations Self Blame for decision making 8 What is Somatic Work and what does it tell us about our sensory perceptions and their ties to the social world Somatic work occurs when somatic perception undergoes reflexive interpretation Interpretation includes reminiscing forming chains of associations evaluating interpreting social norms and attributing meanings It is easy to put labels on what smells good and what smells bad 9 What does it mean to say that emotions are socially constructed and embodied 3 Phases The individual is socialized to try to pay tribute to official definitions of situations with no less than their feelings Stimulus is interpreted and defined Internal response Communicate internal response by drawing between what one WANTS to feel and what one SHOULD feel and what one TRIES to feel Feeling rules dictate how you should feel in a particular situation Emotive dissonance is the conflict between emotions experienced by the employee and those required by the organization Reduces job satisfaction Exacerbates emotional exhaustion 12 What are the three components of Feeling Rules and how might they play into specific situations events occurrences Extent too angry or not angry enough Duration Direction one can feel sad when one should feel happy 13 What are the differences between Sex and Gender which concept or both is socially constructed how do you know and what are the implications of being born intersex Sex Biological traits that distinguish males from females such as internal and external reproductive anatomy chromosomes hormones and other physical characteristics Gender The sum of our development and life course experiences the positions from which we play our roles in the community and the accountability we have to our performance and that of others This is NOT a dichotomous concept Gender is socially constructed but is sex You can change the physicality of the sex but you can t change the genetic makeup Society portrays that there are only two known sexes male and female If an individual is born with parts of both sexes it is deemed as socially unacceptable Because this is so socially unaccepted our culture has found ways to fix those who don t clearly represent strictly female or male and this leads to some problems What does it mean to say that we are doing gender when does this process begin and when does it end if ever What are the various ties these processes have to the conceptualization of gender 14 Doing Gender Gender is performed and policed at all times Individuals are held accountable to social norms Individuals hold others accountable as well Perpetuates gender inequality Gender is constructed from a young age
