is places new members into the social structure it is an institution from ancient times meeting basic needs of reproduction and childcare not because it experiences divorce abuse and other social problems Family is a cultural universal BOGUS The family is a cultural universal regardless of its type BOGUS The American family is diverse HISTORY OF THE FAMILY Tribal treaties o Traditional family practices vary among tribes o The family is a group who reside together and care for each other s survival through reciprocal defense and economic coorperation First Immigrant Families o The family is a group formed by members related by blood and law with common residence caring for each other and in charge of child bearing and social support of dependents Africans o First arrival recorded in 1619 as voluntary immigrants o Later immigrants came largely involuntarily as indentured servants then slaved o Slave owners encouraged marriage and many children in order to maintain and increase their
