ATRAHASISThe Anunna Gods overloaded the Igigi Gods with forced labor. The Igigi Gods worked day and night digging canals and rivers. Infuriated due to all the work, the Igigi Gods decided to declare war. They walked up to Enlil’s House. Enlil, the counselor of the gods then decided that the human must be created. The human was meant to take the burden off the Igigi God’s shoulders and carry out their job. However, with the increasing population of the human and the increasing uproar, Enlil wanted to destroy the humans. He commanded that all provision be cut for humans, the rain be stopped and the yield reduced. Enki, The King of the Depths wanted otherwise. He ordered Atrahasis to inform mankind not to pray to their own goddess but to build a temple of Namtar and knock on the doors of Adad. They offered a baked loaf and flour that shamed the gods. Mankind continued to survive. Soon human life started to deteriorate. Anu and Adad watched over the upper regions andEnlil watched over the lower regions. Enki continued to help man. This angered Enlil andhe created a flood to kill humans. Enki then instructed Atrahasis to build a boat and help humans and animals to survive. Later on Enki tells Nintu, the goddess of childbirth to put an end to man’s life just as she created it. He wanted to cut down childbirth. The humans were living a life of toil and all they did was work for the gods. Therefore, to prevent an endless life of toil, Enki wanted to create mortality. This also helped Enlil and the other gods who were angered by the clamor the humans made due to the continuous increasing population. Enki acts on Nintu’s behalf. Nintu was dejected as she agreed to the destruction of mankind. She regretted her decision.Enlil decided to create man to help the Igigi Gods and he eventually decided to terminate man as well. Enki on the other hand went against Enlil and constantly helped man to survive. Even though Enki wasn’t the creator of man, he helped man get through the major flood that was caused to destroy them. Enki was the God of Sea. He wanted the benefit for the human beings. Whereas, Enlil wanted the benefit for the Gods. The moment Enlil realized that the noise created by mankind was disturbing the Gods, he wanted to end their existence. However, Enki wanted to put an end to Human life to help the human get rid of his life of extreme toil and
