Chapter 5 The Self and Perception intrapersonal communication inner speech takes place within a single person for the purpose of clarifying ideas or analyzing a situation or reflect upon or appreciate something Self talk communicating within yourself o Imagined interactions when you mentally picture or hear ppl communicating Digital communication electronic transmission is made of info that has been encoded by digitally processing second self Self Talk Self Concept Self concept your idea picture of yourself o 4 areas physical moral ethical family social How you act and communicate with others is connected closely with your self perception Ppl with negative self belief system display sensitivity to criticism inappropriate response to flattery hypercritical attitude tendency toward blaming feelings of persecution negative feelings about competition tendency toward seclusion and timidity Psychological vulture attacks a person s perceived weaknesses o Intelligence vulture I m dumb o Creativity vulture I cant draw well o Family vulture My brother is the favorite child o Relationship vulture I m shy o Physical vulture I m too fat o Sexual vulture I m not sexy Replacement method used to overcome negatives Cognitive Processing attitudes and beliefs Cognitive processing is how we deal with info in relationship to our values Values what we perceive to be positive or negative worth Attitudes predispositions Beliefs our convictions Cognitive dissonance the imbalance between your values attitudes and beliefs leads to a guilty conscience Perceptions Senses collect the evidence organize the cues interpret those cues Birthers ppl who jump to conclusions The Self Real self is what you think of yourself when you are being most honest Self confidence sense of competence and effectiveness about your interests thoughts emotions and needs dynamic changing Ideal self is who you would like to be or think you should be Public self is the one you let others know The self is composed of 4 aspects spiritual material social physical A theory stresses that the self evolves form the interactions we have with other ppl and how we interpersonally integrate these interactions into our self thought Johari window a way of looking at yourself allows you to ascertain your willingness to disclose who you are and allows others to disclose to you o Style 1 spend little time disclosing giving feedback good listeners shy quiet o Style 2 spend a great deal of time listening and not much time sending out personal information o Style 3 give a great deal of personal information but don t like tot receive very much good talkers not good listeners o Style 4 ppl like to give and get information Need Drives Affecting Communication The basic forces that determine human behavior are survival of the species pleasure seeking security and territoriality Communication Apprehension Communication apprehension shyness communicatively anxious person Skill training systematic desensitization cognitive modification a willingness to communicate and drug therapy are forms of help The Role of Culture on Self Communication Social orientation includes all aspects of your culture nationality race gender sexual orientation religion Self credentialing verbal mode emphasis is placed on drawing attention to or boasting about one s accomplishments Self humbling verbal mode ppl see the importance of lowering oneself via modest talk verbal restraints and the use of self deprecation Doing oriented approach to life Being oriented approach to life Low context communication socieites emphasis is on the expression of ideas through explicit verbal messages High context communication socieites emphasis is on how the verbal message can best be conveyed through indirect language and the nonverbal channels of silence and subtle tone of voice
