Chapter 8 The Interview The Interview and the Role of the Participants Interview a purposeful conversation between 2 or more persons that follows a basic question and answer format Interviewer the person responsible for arranging for and conducting the interview builds a climate of trust support Interviewee the person who is the subject of the interview Interview agenda outlines the procedures that will be followed to achieve the interaction s purpose opening body closing o Funnel schedule questions are sequenced to take the interview from more general to more specific information o Direct questions open questions closed questions bipolar question leading question loaded question yes response question mirror question probes Interviewee should prepare for the interview by knowing the purpose of the session role and responsibilities expectations and the information needed When answering questions interviewees should o If you don t understand ask for clarification restate the question in the answer answer one question at a time try to turn negative questions into positive answers Three Types of Interviews Employment interview must crucial interview for many ppl a way of finding out about a specific job and entering the job market o Stress these skills in your cover letter listening leadership language abilities ability to develop a logical argument social skills communication style no personal woes show you know the background of the company o Interviewers role is to find out about an applicant and sell the organization position o Preparing for the employment interview Research understand the position for which you are interviewing Be ready to answer the questions posed What are your future plans in what school activities have you participated how do you spend your spare time in what type of position are you most interested what do you think you may like to work for our company what jobs have you held what courses did you like best what courses did you like least why did you choose your particular field of work what are your strengths what are your weaknesses what is your ideal work environment Appearance is just one aspect of how you communicate nonverbally Be prepared to tell the employers your specific job preferences stress your qualifications without exaggeration avoid criticizing former employers and fellow workers be honest ask appropriate questions take notes be careful of interrupting as ideas pop into your mind avoid negative mannerisms ask about the next step o Second Employment Interview provide more detailed information about the position and further determine the candidates fit to the organizational climate job o Behavior Interview designed to allow employers to know what skills you may have and how these skills would translate into performance on the job o Employment stress interview designed to determine how you might function under pressure o Telephone job interview replaces many first personal interviews Confirm the time of the interview select a quiet sitting prepare your desk use a land line try to maintain a positive attitude and high energy hold the phone in one hand listen carefully ask questions o Online interview o Video interviews o Virtual interviews o FOLLOW UP AFTER THE INTERVIEW WITH AN EMAIL OR NOTE Information Gathering Interview interviewer sets out to obtain information from a respondent important to journalists law enforcement authorities health care workers students businesspeople mental health professionals o Make an appointment preplan the questions you want to ask send your list of queries to the interviewee in advance of the session use the five w s and an h approach actively listen take careful notes remember that you are taking up valuable time stay focused Oral History Interview used to establish and maintain an archive of people and their stories Problem solving interview the interviewer and interviewee meet to solve a personal or work related dilemma end goal is to develop a solution that can solve the problem wont cause bigger problems and can be put into effect o Identify define explore Counseling interview is designed to provide guidance and support to the interviewee used by mental health professionals friends managers within organizations family members Persuasive interview purpose is to change or reinforce a person s beliefs or behavior Sales interview persuasive interview process is culturally specific Appraisal interview aka performance review the interviewer helps the interviewee realize the strengths and weaknesses of his or her performance Reprimanding interview the interviewer helps the interviewee analyze problems caused by the latter so that corrections can be made o Inverted funnel schedule interview starts with a specific statement of the problematic performance so that there is no question as to what the problem is Interrogation interview is designed to secure information from an interviewee through extensive use of probing techniques o Law enforcement interrogation o Security interrogation o Legal interrogation Media interview takes place when an interviewer asks questions of
