CONCEPT OF BALANCE OF POWER.o A few people began to raise questions, women excluded from it, Karl Marx- 1848 aborted revolutionso Motivated by educated people. Princes encourage it. Nature of concert of Europe let rev get nipped in the budo Opposition to imperialism—term that becomes important with the global spread of commerce and political empire. Imperialism and empires go together- Opposition to imperialism- Global sources of uneaseRelevance for TodayWorld War I: did warning signs exist? These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.Eastern Ukraine, Crimea, Japan and contesting islands, Self-confidence Europeans had in concert of Europe: was this justified?Greeting of the day:Dee-la Mschvi-do-bi-saMeaning—‘I wish you peace’—Georgian This was one of the earliest churches… preceded catholic church. Georgia became independent in 1991. Had a tough first decade then in 2003 had a “Rose Revolution.” Orange Revolution in Ukraine at that time. This celebrated the end of Communist rule. Migration and UrbanizationMap: “nineteenth century migration”Observations: most people went to US and Canada. Under populated compared to Europe, lot more chances for entrepreneurs, Potato Famine in Ireland, pre-immigration laws set could come from anywhere except ChinaImmigration also went to the east, moving to Siberia. From England, go to South Africa, New Zealand etc. Many people left India to SE Asia, West Indies, moved out as indentured servants (cheap slaves).Division of Africa- Slavery at edges—didn’t stop right away. The British abolished slave trade in 1807. Slavery itself abolished in 1833. Exception made: did not apply to India. Slave like statists continued and many would argue continues today in India- Desire for Wealth: consider analogy for Latin America. Incredible amounts of gold, British found diamonds and gold in South Africa. This was the only country in Africa that was really profitable to colonize. - Hope for markets: “justification” for invasion of China. Opium war said lets invade country to sell this harmful product- Evangelization: churches - Resistance: people in Africa didn’t welcome white people. There was a lot of resistance. Maji Maji Uprising in 1907. Ferrero. First genocide in 1904: The Herero and Namaqua Genocide. Another instance was in the Aba Women’s Riot: riot led by women in Eastern Nigeria in 1928. Women led the way when taxes were imposed. They protested traditionally and effectively. Took off their clothes and got the British to end their policy immediately. Four C’s: commercialization, conversion, civilization, colonization- Which European country grabbed which on map? BelgiansSpheres of Influence (important)o Not same as annexation or colonization. A sphere of influence is an area which an outside power has a great deal of influence on. Russia has great deal over eastern Ukraine. Country that the US has a lot of influence over? China? No. Taiwan? Yes- Qing dynastyo Ruling house came from outside the main areas of the country. Swept in and imposed their room. Qing was oustedo Note map showing spheres of influence that Europeans had over China. British, Germans, Japanese, Russians and French. All of them were there grabbing for spoils. - Boxer rebelliono Means society of righteous ___. In Beijing equally resented degree of influence Europeans were bringing. Thought they were invulnerable. Compare to maji maji in 1907 east Africa (maji means water in Swahili). Similar belief in east china. Very quickly crushed primarily by Japanese troops. This is part of reason japan became involved in its own empire- Implicit/explicit divisiono Artillery, effective organization, proud cavalry of the Qing dynasty. Areas of Chinese influence were taken away from it. Taiwan was taken over by Japan. China had a good reason to feel really insecure.European InsecurityShown: picture of Bastille in Paris. It used to be a prison. Ripping it down was the mark of the start of revolution. - 1848 and surprises-- 1848 was a time of surprises. Concert of Europe threatened by democratic efforts- Labor unrest—increased industrialization and kind of working conditions people experienced were common byproducts. People were less healthy, an inch to two inches shorter. Labor unions were organized and owners resisted strongly- Rise of large companies—fair to say that a firm like Microsoft or a large oil company has a high degree of influence in government. Size and resources count. Economic empires grew. Kruk in Germany were major manufactured of arms. Kruger monopolized matches. Japan the Zaibatsu—leaders of major firms, work closely with government in industrialization. Andrew Carnegie—built up largest fortune in world and gave it all away- Financial crises—overexpansion was common. US we had panics and many connected with speculation and railroad construction- German expansion—look at changes in boundaries. All the sudden in middle of Europe, fragmented entity, Holy Roman Empire became a very different kind of state than it had been.Map of 1850 Central Europe: div Prussian in half, Austria and Hungary kind of split,. What happened to Prussia? Germany became a state by a proclamation done by Versailles, in France. Country that defeated them used it to proclaim this new German empire: this is so called SECOND RIGHT, (The third right was referring to Germany under Hitler). Looking at Italy: was also not unified so be aware that Italy itself is a relatively new nation.New Roles for Women- Separate spheresClear division of labor; Four Cs were mentioned before about remembering imperialism; now think of these three Ks for women’s roles:Kinder (kiss), Kusha (kitchen), Kiersha (church)Women are more religious, take care of kids and are in charge of food. They had no political or economic
