Kin 247 - Spring 2016 Assignment 4 Total Points: 140 points total + 5 potential bonus points Due Date: Friday December 16th by 5pm (paper copy) and submitted on Moodle Purpose: To learn about a type of cancer we did not cover in class. You will discover and report information about prevalence, incidence, mortality, risk factors and how physical activity is related to prevention or treatment of the cancer. You can work alone or in a group with up to 3 individuals. If you work in a group, you will hand in one assignment with ALL of your group members’ names on it and all group members will receive the same grade. There are over 100 types of cancer. In class we covered colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer. You will have to choose a cancer other than these 3. An alphabetical list of types of cancer can be found on the American Cancer Society’s website: https://www.cancer.gov/types. Examples of cancers you can choose from include (you can choose others not on the list too): • lung cancer • leukemia • lymphoma • ovarian cancer • bladder cancer • brain cancer • melanoma You will create slides in PowerPoint that include all of the necessary information for your cancer (see below). The final document that you hand in will be a .pdf document with up to two slides per page. The instructions for creating a PDF through PowerPoint are found at the end of the document. If you have questions, do not hesitate to ask in class or come to office hours. If the slides are too small to read when you put two on a page, you may turn them into a .pdf with one slide per page. The check boxes below are to help you make sure you have included everything that is necessary. You will hand in: • A PDF of your slides ☐ o 10 points given for stapling and formatting as PDF with 2 (or fewer) slides per page • A page of notes describing the data in the slides (read below for which slides need description) ☐ • A list of the references you used for the project should be at the bottom of the notes page (see below for more detail) ☐ Instructions for creating powerpoint slides: As you create your powerpoint slides, compile a list of citations so it is clear where the information you use came from. This includes citations for the studies you report on (#7+ below), but also citations for any facts you provide, such as incidence, prevalence, and risk factors for your condition. 1) Slide #1 - title slide (5 points). Your title slide needs to include: • Title of your presentation including the words physical activity and the condition you chose to study ☐ • All group member’s names ☐2) Slide #2 - define and describe the cancer you chose. You can use visuals to complement your text (5 points) ☐ 3) Slide #3 - deaths from this cancer. How many people die from this cancer? Are there any notable factors about deaths from this cancer? Do deaths occur more from this cancer in a certain age or population? This can be in words, graph, or table. (5 points) ☐ 4) Slide #4 - must be a figure or table that contains incidence (e.g., how many people are diagnosed with this condition in the United States) or prevalence (e.g., how many people have the condition in the United States) information about the condition (10 points). ☐ You will write a description about the incidence or prevalence of your condition (5 points). You should type the description on a separate notes page. On that page you must write which slide the notes correspond to and the slides must be numbered. Descriptions for all slides must be in your own words. Include the citations at the bottom of the notes page. ☐ 5) Slide #5 - must include a figure or table that contains incidence (e.g., how many people are diagnosed with this condition in the United States) or prevalence (e.g., how many people have the condition in the United States) information about the condition by age, sex, race, or country (you get to choose one of these) (10 points). ☐ You will write a description about the figure or table (e.g., is there a trend? No trend? How do you know?) This description should be typed on the accompanying notes page (described in #4). It must be clear which slide the notes correspond to and the slides must be numbered. Include the citation at the bottom of the notes page. (5 points). ☐ 6) Slide #6 - Your next slide must include at least 3 risk factors for the condition (try to find modifiable and non-modifiable). Make sure to be specific and describe how the risk factor relates to the type of cancer. For example, if sex is a risk factor make sure to indicate which sex has a higher risk (10 points). ☐ 7) Slides #7+ - Find at least 3 studies that examine the role of physical activity and your cancer. These studies can highlight the role of physical activity in either prevention or treatment of the cancer. Therefore, you need at least 3 slides dedicated to this portion of the assignment. The studies must be found in journal articles (e.g., use Google scholar or Pubmed) and must have measured physical activity and your condition. ☐ For each study you should have 1-3 slides that includes ALL of the following (45 points): • Study title and authors ☐ • Study design (e.g., cross-sectional, case-control, prospective cohort, RCT, etc.) ☐ • Study methods (brief, but enough so that we know what was done in the study) ☐ • Study population (e.g., both men and women? Age range? Number of subjects) ☐ • How PA was measured (e.g., self-report? accelerometer?) ☐ • How the cancer was measured (e.g., health history? Doctor diagnosis?) ☐ • What was the main finding of the study? ☐8) You need one slide that contains a graph from one of your studies (the most convincing graph) and the slide following the graph should describe the graph in detail (10 points). The description should include: • What are on the x and y axes? ☐ • What information is in the legend (if there is one)? ☐ • Description of what is the graph demonstrating. ☐ If the data is more convincing as a table, you may provide the table, but should include: • What are the rows and columns? ☐ • What do any symbols represent? ☐ • Description of what the table is demonstrating. ☐ 9) You should have a slide that describes at least one physiological mechanism (e.g., how does physical activity reduce the risk of your condition) that supports the link between physical
