Henry M. WilliamsHistory 1111Professor KurtOctober 14, 20111. The Torah is the written law also known as the five books of Moses. These books teach the Jew how to live and treat others. It also give them knowledge on how to kill animals for food. Some Jewish scholars have written commentaries to further the understanding of the torah. One of the famous stories is the exodus out of Egypt.2. Bodhisattvas are people who are trying to reach enlightenment for the service of other people. Most of them are renown through the Buddhist community and have stupa built in their honor. To be a bit more specific I believe they get to the brim of enlightenment then come back to show others the way.3. Osiris Is the lord of the afterlife and vegetation. He is usually depicted with greenish skin.He was murdered by his brother Seth and cut into pieces and Osiris’s wife Isis found every piece then put him back together with her magic. Then she and Osiris conceive Heru.4. Drama was a play written in preformed in Greek theaters. It was created around 500 to 400 B.C. it consisted of a chorus dressed in deer skins. All male actor wore mask. Plus yearly competitions were held and playwrights had to release a trilogy of tragedies. A man named Thebis was the First to step aside and play Dionysus .If I Were to Write a Book on Ancient Religions. If I were to write a book on ancient religion based on the world religions we’ve covered in class thus far, I would have to say my book would be about the companionship of great civilization and religion. This topic would be a very interesting topic for discussion the historical community especially if I emphasize the fact that civilization that had thriving and in-depth religious studies and practices are embroidered in the tapestry of time. Then you would have to look at the ones who have never taken the time to get a stable religious practice are eventually washed out by other religions and forgotten in the sands of time. I would stand on this principle that when a religion fails to evolve the civilization begins to crumble. Most civilization with strong religious ideas that leave room for correction and growth tend to last longer than civilization who basically just go for what they know. Great rulers of the past and the future used some sort of divination to assert there legitimate claim to their Empires. Some would claim to be the children of God or gods in the flesh. Keep in mind how this was a great tool to keep his civilians from rebelling against him. Like the Egyptians they used the god on earth thing that they’re people worshiped them as Gods. Here where writing comes into play. So now you could write your story and it will stay the same, plus you now had the opportunity to keep up with how much wealth you had and how many people lived under your rule. Some kings like Caesar Augustus used the fact that people in Rome were worshiping Julius Caesar as his stepping stone to uniting Rome under his rule. One incident in particular he used Hailey’s comet to solidify his claim to divine hood, by saying that the comet was Julius Caesar was ascending to heaven.( http://www.pbs.org/empires/romans/empire/augustus_religion.html) Then you have rulers who conquerothers and use religion for financial gain like the Spanish inquisition. There are reports that say a man name Hernando Pizarro came to an Incan King by the name of Atahualpa and handed him a bible and said that it was filled with the divine word of God and if he obeyed it peace will come to comfort him. Atahualpa took the book and put it up to his ear and said “Why doesn’t it speak to me?” and this one action according to lore gave Pizarro the reason he need to go on a killing spree in the name of God because that made it okay right? This event and many events cause the Spain to grow very rich from the inquisitions. Now let me take you back to Al Andalas under Moorish control of most of the Iberian peninsula brought to what we call Spain knowledge that the Catholic faith banned, bt since the rulers over the Spaniard were Muslim they were educated in astronomy and other sciences that place them a head of the game when they finally got their sovereignty back. The primary sources I would use to validate my proposition would be Arabic, African, Eastern and a little bit of European/American history books. I choose theses sources because in these places religions and civilizations were created, incubated and transformed into some of the greatest teachings that would help us to understand why we are the way we are. Biblical stories gave later civilizations something to look for rather it is wealth, enlightenment, paradise or heaven. These stories have given birth to some of the most powerful and influential civilization because they all had one goal to built temples and built empires like those of the books.Reference1.
