Madison McVeyCHEM 237 – 549October 20, 2016Extraction Lab Report Results: After the initial measurement of 2.001 g of the benzocaine/benzoic acid mixture underwent liquid-liquid extraction methods, filtration apparatuses, and dried for a week, 0.599 g of benzocaine and 0.614 g of benzoic acid was recovered from the extraction experiment. To test the purity of the extracted compounds, a melting point test was performed and the results indicated a melting point of 91.2 °Cfor benzocaine and 123.4 °C for benzoic acid. Discussion: Knowing t the mass of the recovered compounds, it was possible to find the percent yield of the compound. The calculations are included below:% yield =[(0.599 g benzocaine+0.614 g benzoic acid)2.001 g mixture]×100=60.62% yieldThe results of the melting point test can be compared to the known melting point values of benzocaine at 92 °C and benzoic acid at 122.41 °C. The melting point of a compound has a deviation of +/- 1 °C, and both of the melting points obtained during week 2 of the lab fall within that range. Based on this and the results of the percent yield calculations, I would consider this lab a success and the extraction of benzocaine and benzoic acid from an impure mixture of the two accomplished. Theslight deviation between the values can be accounted for through the possibility of the purified compounds still containing impurities or some of the purified substancewas lost in solution or during filtration. Overall, the data recorded proves the success of the experiment and that the method of liquid-liquid extraction is a legitimate way to separate an impure
