Madison McVeyCHEM 237 – 549November 2, 2016Preparative Gas Chromatography Lab ReportResults: The unknown A-2 was assigned to me during the Prep GC laboratory, and through the use of preparative gas chromatography, infrared spectroscopy, and comparison of known IR reports, the identity of the second compound of this unknown was determined to be 2-heptanone. Discussion: For this experiment, students were assigned partners and each extracted a compound using gas chromatography techniques. My lab partner extracted the first compound, that exhibited a retention time of 0-1.7 minutes under 155° conditions. After the first compound was collected, I collected the second with a retention time range of 0-2.3 minutes, under the same 155° conditions. The identity of my partner’scompound is unfortunately unknown, because she left the lab early and did not share her results with the TA or myself, nor identify the compound before leaving. However, the identity of my compound is 2-Heptanone, because when compared to the known IR reports outside of the laboratory, the values were nearly identical to that of the 2-Heptanone standard. The IR report is included in this lab packet for
