Madison McVeyCHEM 237 – 549December 5, 2016Dehydration of Cyclohexanol Lab Report In this lab, students were expected to form cyclohexene through the dehydration of cyclohexanol in an elimination reaction. The conical vial was weighedbefore the reaction took place and was found to weigh 19.730 g. After the reaction, the vial weighed 20.317 g, thus yielding 0.587 g of cyclohexanol. The procedure of this experiment also called for the permanganate and bromine tests to be performed. The results of both of these tests were positive, indicating the presence of a double bond. Because the permanganate and bromine tests were positive, this experiment can be considered successful as the cyclohexanol underwent a dehydration elimination reaction and formed a C=C double bond to produce cyclohexene. Students were also asked to produce an IR spectrum and analyze the similarities to the known spectrums of cyclohexene and cyclohexanol. The spectrum obtained is attached to this report, and it can be seen that it closely resembles the standard cyclohexene spectrum by observing the nearly identical peaks at 3022.97 cm-1 and 2924.98 cm-1, among others. The similarity between the two spectrums further supports the conclusion that this experiment was successful. Unexpected events that occurred were when we had issues getting an accurate IR spectrum, which was attributed to the troubles we had with drying the cyclohexene after the second distillation performed. To correct this, additional CaCl2was added and we were then able to get an accurate IR spectrum. Other than this small detour, the experiment was otherwise
