Knowledge Define information literacy.You need to develop the abilities to determine what information you need, access information effectively and efficiently, evaluate information critically, use and incorporate information ethically and legally. Application How can becoming information literate help you, as a consumer, make better decisions?7.2. Knowledge Describe the three main steps in developing a successful research strategy.1) Create research questions- think of what you want to know and what your audience might like to know. 2) Generate a list of symptoms- generate a list of potential search terms based on the key concepts on your topic. 3) Search information resources- resources contain supporting materials that you canuse for your speech. Many of these resources can be accessed through the Internet. ApplicationHow does each step help you to develop your speech topic?7.3. Knowledge List and define the five types of supporting material.1) Books- covers virtually any topic. Their length allows books to contain a lot of information on a topic, and typically contain historical information. This makes books a useful source to put your topic in context with other issues. 2) Journals- completed first-hand by credentialed scholars and adds new informationto the body of research on a topic. These articles are in-depth and cover very specific research in the researcher’s field with the goal of communicating and enriching scholarly communication. 3) Magazines- magazines are published at regular intervals throughout the years and articles are available quickly in stores or online, making them a good bet for finding current information or recent events. 4) Newspapers/New sources- in addition to news feed available on the open web, monitoring local and campus newspapers can help you identify topic ideas. 5) Government documents- these documents cover important public policy issues and include such items as congressional hearing, research studies, and reports. 6) Statistics- provides a numerical method for summarizing data and cake take such forms as means, medians, ratios, and percentages. 7) Interviews- information based on people who have had a personal experience or who are recognized experts on your topic. Application What types of support material have you used in the past? What types would you like to consider now? Knowledge What should you consider when selecting and incorporating support material for your speech?Analogies- these are useful if you want to compare the defining characteristics of one concept to another. Facts- a fact is a statement that is verifiable as true. Examples- specific instances developed at varying lengths and used by speakers to make an abstract idea concrete. You can use brief, extended or hypothetical examples to supportyour claims. Testimony- speakers use testimony when they quote or paraphrase an authoritative source. Application What are the implications for using support material that may violate one of these considerations?7.5. Knowledge What information should be included in an oral citation?Consists of information about who authored the material you are using, a statement aboutthe credibility of the author, the date the information was publishes, and relevant information about the source.
