Learning about constructing effective introductions and conclusions will also help us to make connections with the audience o that they learn from or are influenced by our message. An effective introduction will motivate the audience to listen to the speech. Application In what ways does the introduction prepare your audience to listen to your speech?What are the implications if you do not prepare them to listen?10.2 Knowledge Name and explain the four goals for an introduction.1) Capture the audience’s attention- begin with an attention getter, which is a strong opening statement that uses some kind of creative device to capture your audiences attention and motivate them to listen. You could provide a quotation, start with a startling statement, stimulate the audience’s imagination, tell a story, use humor, or refer to a recent event for your attention getter. 2) Establishing the relevance of your topic to your audience- you should indicate to members of the audience why they should listen to your topic. Once you establishthe overall relevance of your topic, you now need to provide a specific relevance statement to your audience. 3) Establishing speaker credibility- you must provide a credibility statement that explains your connection to the topic. Aside from explicitly telling the audience, there are other, subtler, ways to establish speaker credibility. Competence and character comprise credibility. 4) Previewing the presentation- the last part of the introduction is an overview of the content of your presentation. This includes both the thesis and preview statements.The thesis statement is the framework for the body of your presentation. To accomplish this, providea summary of your main claims. You will give your audience a hint that the summary is coming by signposting the end of your presentation using terms such as finally, in closing, or to summarize. This is your final opportunity to summarizethe most important information in your presentation. 2) Providing a memorable close- the last statement you make indicated in a powerfulway that your presentation is complete and should be remembered. Anything you can use as an attention getter can also be used as a memorable close. The attentiongetter and the memorable close could serve as the bookend of your speech. The purpose of this last statement is to emphasize the end of your speech.
