Conclusion of the PlayCurrent LectureEuripides’ MedeaSince We Last Saw Our Heroes- Medea and Jason expelled from Ioikos- End up in Corinth- Creon, King of Corinth welcomes-Not same Creon as in Thebes-Creon=Greek for “Ruler”- ~10 years have passed -> two young sons- Just before the play begins:-Jason decides to marry the princess of Corinth, Creon’ daughter-Creon decides what to do about MedeaEuripides’ Medea- Performed in 431 BCE-Very early in Euripides’ career-Compared to other Euripides’ plays (and one Sophocles play) we’ve read:->Medea: 431 BCE->Oedipus the King (Sophocles): 429 BCE->Hippolytus: 428 BCE->Heracles: 416 BCE->Bacchae: 405 BCE-3rd place out of 3 in the City of Dionysia festival-Became very popular laterMedea- Foreign (“barbarian”)- A powerful witch- Granddaughter of a sun god- Married (?) to Jason-Father and brother didn’t give her away-Not Greek-> Athenian Citizenship Laws- Emotional shift: grieving, then angry- Major themes:-Greeks vs. Foreigners-Role of womenThe Plot Thickens- King Creon banishes Medea and sons from Corinth- Medea wins one more day, to figure out where she will go- Now Medea needs two things:-Somewhere to go-Revenge against JasonDilemma #1 Solved- Enter Aiegeus, king of Athens and father of Theseus (though not yet)- He is an old friend of Medeas- He wants kids and can’t have them-Another important theme in the play: the importance of children- Medea can solve his problem with magic!- Medea can go to Athens and live with himConclusion of the Play- Medea and Jason argue- Medea takes children to bury them in the sanctuary of Hera- Medea predicts (correctly!) how Jason will die- Medea takes off on her chariot bound for
