PSYC 3070 1st Edition Lecture 13Taking Care of the Sexual BodyBreast Health- Breast cancer is the 2nd most common cancer among women (after skin canceer)- It is also the 5th leading cause of death among women in the USRisks for Breast Cancer:- Being overweight (particularly after menopause)- Drinking alcohol- Using certain oral contraceptives (recently)- Not having kids or having them later in life (30s/40s)- Late menopause- Hormone replacement therapy for an extended time- Being a white womanBreast Health: What you can do- Maintain a healthy weight (exercise, nutrition)- Limit alcohol consumption- Check your breasts for lumps 3-5 days after your period- Know your family history- Engage in regular checkups with gynecologist- Ask your doctor about risks associated with your oral contraceptive Warning SignsThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- New lumps/ change in current lump- Change in size/shape- Persistent pain in breast or nipple- Flaky, red or swollen skin- Dimpled breast when arm is raised- Highly tender or inverted nippleFemale Gynecological Health-HPV is the leading cause of cervical cancer in womenRisks for female Gyno cancers:- Obesity- Smoking- Drinking- HPV- Not having a pap test/not following up after abnormal test resultsPap smear – screening for precancerous and cancerous tissue (involves collecting a small sample of cervical tissue of analysis)- At age 21 then every 2 years- Cervical cancer can often be prevented with regular screeningsUrinary Track Infections – UTIs- An infection of the urethra, bladder, or other urinary structure- Usually caused by bacteria- More common in women- Symptoms: urge to urinate, burning sensation, and small amounts of urine, bloody/cloudy urineReduce Risks- Drinking a lot of water/fluids, and drink a glass of water after intercourse- Do not hold your urine and urine right after intercourse (wipe front to back)- Avoid using irritating feminine products- Wear cotton underwearVaginitis – inflammation of the vagina- Causes: changes in the normal bacteria in the vaginao Infection in the bodyo Reduced estrogen levels- Symptoms: itching, discharge, pain- Types: bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection, trichromaniasis, atrophicReduce yeast infection risks:- Limit your intake of sugar (especially added sugar) & refined grains (consume low sugar fruits and whole grains)- Increase your consumption of high-fiber foods (vegetables) and get adequate protein- Water- Sleep – immune system- Exercise- Washing genital frequently- If you take an antibiotic, make sure to increase your intake of probiotic supplements and foods (take a probiotic daily during and after antibiotic
