PSYC 3070 1st Edition Lecture 17Hormonal Methods- Hormonal implants: small tubes of progestin that are inserted under the skin of a woman’s upper armo Provide continuous protection against pregnancy o TFR: .05%- The Patch: a patch worn on specific areas of the body which releases estrogen and progestin directly to the skino TFR: 1-2%- The Vaginal Ring: flexible, transparent ring placed in the vagina, chic releases hormones every day for 3 weekso TFR: 1.5%Emergency Contraception: concentrated hormonal pills that can interrupt a woman’s normal hormonal patterns to protect against unplanned pregnancy in the event of unprotected intercourse or failed contraception- Available over the counter to women 17+- The most common form is Plan B and contains levonorgestreal. It must be taken within 72 hoursof intercourse- TFR: 5-25%Abortion in the 1st TrimesterMifepristone (RU486) – an oral medication that can induce spontaneous abortions/miscarriages in the first trimester of pregnancy- It must be taken within 9 weeks of the woman’s last menstrual period These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
