Deviance results from strain. This strain in the mind caused by societypushing to success (American dream) w/o providing all members themeans to succeeda.ii. IE. American Success= materialistic values = cultural goala.iii. Success acquired through institutional means (school/job) according to Mertona.iv. Everyone pushed to this dream & not all segments have equal access which is necessary (crime results from this)b. Merton's 4 types of Devianceb.i.
