Fall 2014 Exam #3 Study Guide SOCY 1004 The third exam is scheduled for Thursday, December 11, 2014 during our normal class time (5-6:15 pm). (NOTE: This exam is NOT during finals week!!) The format of the exam is a mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions. The questions will cover reading and lecture-related themes. You will be provided enough space on the exam sheet to write your responses and a scantron for the multiple choice questions, so you do not need to bring your own paper, bluebooks, etc... Please make sure that you bring a pencil (for the scantron) and a pen (for the short answer) with you to class—you MUST use a pencil for the scantron if you wish to receive credit for your answers! This is a closed-book, closed-note exam, so please come prepared! Week 11: - What are some of the core components of goth culture? How are these different from mainstream culture? - What are the new techniques of stigma management provided in the textbook? o Be able to provide examples for each (and categorize examples provided by me) o Know the difference between discredited and discreditable stigma - From the Wilkins reading and our class discussions, what is “babe feminism?” How is it present within goth subculture? - Be able to explain (based on the Wilkins reading) how goth women simultaneously feel empowered by their subcultural norms as well as how these norms reproduce gender inequality between men and women in the scene. Week 12: - Know the 5 stages of a moral panic (from the Haenfler textbook) - Know the 5 indicators of a moral panic (from lecture) - What is a “folk devil?” What are some examples of this concept? - Be familiar with Ben’s guest lecture and how it applies to course concepts. Week 13: - What are the different vocabularies of motive from the Scully and Marolla reading?- Be familiar with statistics regarding rape and sexual assault (such as- how common is it? Is it over/under-reported?) o What is the difference between a “false” and “unsubstantiated” claim? - What is “victim blaming” and how does it relate to examples of rape culture provided in class? - Be familiar with how individual, cultural, and institutional factors influence the prevalence of sexual assaults on college campuses (from the Armstrong et al. reading) Week 15: - Be familiar with the four different types of deviance and be able to give examples of behaviors that fit into each category (Haenfler) - Who are “virginity pledgers?” According to the reading by Ross Haenfler, are these movements successful? Why or why not? - Be familiar with the film we watched in class on the abstinence-only movement. In particular, be able to relate it to larger cultural norms about sexuality and gender roles. - What are the different perspectives on “hookup culture?” (Armstrong et al.) o What are the different experiences for women, according to the Hamilton et al. reading? Week 16: - Be familiar with the different perspectives on how to understand prostitution. - How does stigma and labeling impact the lives of sex workers? - Know the meaning of the “anti-trafficking rehabilitation complex” and how it relates to how we construct sex
