Getting caught and publicly identified!! ! 2. Retrospective interpretation (schur)!! ! 3. Spoiled Identity (Goffman)!! ! 4. Exclusion (Lemert)!! ! 5. Inclusion (Lemert)!! ! 6. Treated Differently!! ! 7. Internalization of the label (Cooley)!!! - Master Status - one that defines out primary identity !! ! - Something that you hold for your whole life!! ! - transsituational !! ! - EX: Race, gender, age, religion!!! - Auxiliary Traits - qualities often associated with master status!! ! - EX: Heroin-user, sexually promiscuous, obese, ex-felon!!!- Deviant Identity Stages:!!!1. Primary Deviance (Lemert)!! ! ! "secret deviance" (Becker)!! ! ! - engaging in activity but others do not know about it, so no labeling, you may not see it as deviant because you havent been labeled for it!!!2. Secondary Deviance (Lemert)!! ! ! - You get caught...!! ! ! - Adlers and Adlers 7 stages occur here!!!3. Tertiary Deviance (Kitsuse)!! ! ! - You have accepted the deviance and are ok with it!!The Identity Change Process!! 1. Initial Status - ppl begin by thinking of themselves as falling within the normal range (old you)!!! Status Cues: are not a stage in the identity change process but they are the cues that move ppl through the recognizing and placing stages!!!!1. Active cues: getting teasted!! ! ! ! - These occur through direct interactions with other ppl!!!!2. Passive Cues: not fitting into clothes, seeing yourself in the mirror!1Friday, October 24, 2014! 2. Recognizing - at some pt ppl recognize that they do not fit into the identity through which they see themselves (moderately normal)!! 3. Placing - the next step is for them to figure out where they belong, what is the apporpriate identity for them!! 4. New Status - Accepted, a deeper and more personal than placing state ( the "new you")!! ! - Takes an identity transformation to adopt it personally!!Becoming Bisexual (Weinbery, Williams, Pryor):!! - 4 stages of becoming bisexual !!!1. Inition confusion - unable to categorize feelings, and have to deal with any homophobia!!!2. Finding and applying the label - finding out that the category bisexual exsisted was a turning point!!!3. Settling into the identity - this is the more complete stage in self labeling !! ! ! - support of others as well as environmental support!!!4. Continued Uncertainty - not a lot of public recognition of bisexuality!! ! ! a. absence of bisexual role models!! ! ! b. no real bisexual community!! ! ! c. no public recognition of bisexuality!! ! ! d. the fact that they are accepted by neither homosexuality nor heterosexuality community!!Eating Disorders!! - Career of Eating disorders!!!1. Conforming behavior - dieting would be conforming behavior!!!2. Primary Deviance - deiters were often unable to maintain weight loss through dieting and turn to eating disordered behaviors!!!3. Secondary Deviance - something has happened and individuals become exposed for their deviance!! ! ! - Now others treat them differently!! ! ! - They internalize the deviant label!!!!4? Quaternary Deviance - not only is it ok with people but now they become activist and promote it .
