Lecture 2 Outline of Last Lecture II. Eras of I/O psychology III. Trends in I/O Psychology over time Outline of Current Lecture II. Overview of research in I/O III. Statistical Procedures IV. Research Methods Current Lecture II. Overview of research in I/O a. There are three purposes in research —> description, explanation, and prediction. It is rooted in theory and supported by the data b. The cycle of research is a switch off between theory and data III. Statistical Procedures a. means, medians, and modes are measures of central tendency in a distribution of data b. We need 3 different measures of central tendency because the values are affected by the distribution of data c. variability is measured by the variance or the standard deviation d. Correlations are an index of the linear relationship between variables. The value ranges from -1 to +1 where the sign indicates the direction of the relationship e. Coefficient of determination estimates how much is gained in prediction by using the other variable f. 0.5 is a really strong correlation in I/O Psychology and 0.3 is pretty good PSY 3711 1st Edition These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best !used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute. !IV. Research Methods a. Experiments i. These are rare in I/O but allow for tests of causation ii. Use intervention and control groups paired with random assignment to determine the cause by ruling out other possible explanations for the differences we observe. iii. This method is ideal but not always easy or possible b. Quasi-experiments i. Common but are hard to interpret because of the weak design due to a pre-existing group c. Correlational
