BIOL 109N 1st Edition Lecture 1 Outline of Last Lecture No previous lecture Outline of Current Lecture I. What is LIFE? II.7 Characteristics of LIFE III.Biological Diversity-Levels of organizations of life. Current LectureI. Defining life might seem to be easy, but its not. No single definition applies to all forms of life. We can only list the traits associated with life. Everything that is alive is made up different elements. II. There are 7 characteristics of LIFE in all living and non-living organisms. 1. All living things must contain nucleic acids, proteins, carbohydrates and lipids. 2. All living and non-living things are composed of cells: cells are the smallest units oflife. There is unicellular and multicellular organism. All bacteria is unicellular prokaryotic organism (ex. Amoeba) and humans, animals and plants are multicellular living organism. 3. All living things have to grow and all organisms reproduce their own kind. Example:the human life cycle: fertilized egg -> foetus -> baby -> child -> teenager -> adult -> old age -> death. 4. All living things use energy and raw materials: all chemical reactions that occur within the cells of living things. Example: The father is feeding his child. 5. All living things respond to their environment: your nervous system processes sensory input, your skeleton and muscular system enable to respond. Example: thechameleon sees and catches its prey. 6. All living things maintain homeostasis- constant self-regulating internal environment of a living organism. Example: The persons’ body temperature has toremain about 37˚C in spite of extreme environmental temperature. 7. Population of living things evolves and has adaptive traits. Adaptive traits that help survive and reproduce in natural environment. Natural selection where members of reproducing population possess beneficial traits will survive better than those without those traits. These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.III. Biological Diversity the number and variety of species found within a specified geographic region. Life can be organized on many levels:- Population – individual of the same species living in distinct geographic area- Community – all living species that can potentially interact in a particular geographic area- Ecosystem – all living organisms in a community along with their physical environment - Biosphere – part of earth that supports life and where life is
