Cuba- Jose Marti, leader of Cuba, The Libre Movement - Moved to New York- Weiler- Americans called him butcher- Cuban Revolutionaries caught him- Yellow Journalism- William Randolph Hearst- Joseph Pulitzer- Spanish evil, Cubans innocent, fake story produced by yellow Pulitzer- “Remember the Maine”- ship explodes, everyone thinks it was b/c of Spanish- President McKinley was thought of as soft and wouldn’t do anything about the Spanish bomb- U.S. declares war on Spain 1898- Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough riders storm San Juan Hill- U.S. colored troops also stormed San Juan Hill- Rough riders brought photographers with them, they became the popular troops because of this- Many troops died from battle and dieses- War was to take over the sugar fields- The Platt Amendment- Cuba cannot make a treaty without American approval, theU.S. military can intervene in Cuba whenever, U.S. owns Gitmo bay- price Cubans had to pay for American occupation to end- Not independent, owned by U.S.II. The Philippines- The Insurrection against Catholic Priests- Spanish Navy at Manila Bay- Emiliano Aguinaldo- The Catholic church owned most of the land, if people wanted to own land they had to do work for the priests- People killed priests b/c of this- Natives overthrew Spanish everywhere except Manila- Dewy and Americans arrive at Manila Bay- Fight between Spanish and Americans, Americans win- Dewy is hero of Philippines fight, 1899- Aguinaldo teamed up with Dewy to overthrow Spanish at Manila- Spanish commander also teamed up with Dewy and staged a fake fight- Spanish “lose” to Americans- McKinley occupies Philippines, doesn’t liberate them like America did for Cuba- Filipinos fought back against the Americans- Balangiga Massacre- Philippian- American war, Filipinos attacked Americans, Americans retreat to their ships- War crimes- General Jacob Smith, got civilians out of city and marines put them in prison, Smith wanted them killed- Aguinaldo brought to U.S., given choice to die or house arrest, chose house
