Jim Crows Law- Supreme court ruled that separation accommodations should be equal- John Marshall Harlet- southern disagreed while 8 Northern judges agreed- Some southern states passed poll taxes - Some passed literacy tests - Literacy test- you could not read document then you couldn’t vote- Grandfather Law- exempt from voting if your grandfather voted- System made by south and north to teach blacks, that whites are superiorIII. Lynching and the Black Response- Blacks accused of raping white women- White mobs would break into jail and hang the blacks- 187 lynching’s in 1890 - Stereotype that black men lusted after white women- W.E.B. Du Bois said that if blacks could prove that they are as talented as whites then the system would fall apart- The system was designed so that this could not be proven- Ida B. Wells- wrote pamphlet about protesting and had to move to North for safety- Booker T. Washington- said that blacks should accommodate, not accept, whites- Go to school and work and prove to whites that they are equal and successful - Atlanta Compromise- if whites stop killing, blacks will stop protesting- Fighting back caused whites to attack blacks, even if they were not fighting back- Alex Manly- editor of newspaper in N. Carolina, wrote paper accusing whites of being hypocritical- Riots started in N. Carolina, race
