ENGR 131 – Fall 2013 No Impact Children (NIC)DUE Date: 8B – Oct. 10 Section 005, Team # __18____Milestone 1 (M1): Problem ScopingThis Milestone is due at the same time as Homework 08, but will be submitted in AssignmentDropbox HW08_Milestone1. Bring a printed copy of M1in your Design Notebook to Class 8B.The objective of Milestone 1is for teams to take time to do research and gather information on their specific problem/need, and to think deeply about and understand (1) the broader context of the problem, (2) the needs, criteria, constraints of the end user/key stakeholders, and (3) the issues that could complicate their solution. Teams must synthesize the information they have gathered so far, apply what they have learned about creating good responses, and record their answers to these questions in the Design Worksheet (attached).A. Write a clear 2-3 sentence description of the MIC need your team chose. Why is this need an important one?B. What is the goal – the desired result that your team commits to achieve – of your project? Review the Class 7A lecture on writing a goal (address the SMART acronym).C. Who are the stakeholders who may be affected by this project? For each stakeholder, explain the stakeholder’s relationship to the need. Identify with  if a stakeholder is a direct user.D. How will each stakeholder be affected by this project and your solution? Describe some issues (a minimum of five) that might arise for the stakeholders when your solution is implemented.E. Individually, talk to stakeholders (parents, teachers, children, relatives, etc.) or observe them in action (Youtube if you do not know a child). Ask them about their needs. What do they want (criteria are clear, measurable, distinguish options)? What must they have (constraints are the criteria that must be met)?F. Why might this problem be complex to solve? Describe at least 2 ideas.G. What assumptions have you made?H. What questions do you still need to explore?I. Search this need on the internet. What other information have you found? Cite using APA.J. Individually, what did you specifically contribute to M1?Deliverable1. Save this completed Milestone 1 document as M1_ teamnum2. Print out a hard copy of this completed Milestone 1 document, place it in your Team Design Notebook, and be prepared to have your peer teacher review it in Class 8B.3. Submit an electronic copy to your instructor’s Bb Assignment Drop Box HW08_Milestone1 before the start of Class 8B.Hynes, October 2013 tmpiwohdb4aENGR 131 – Fall 2013 No Impact Children (NIC)DESIGN WORKSHEETA. Describe your team’s NIC need in 2-3 sentences. Describe why the need is important.Children often waste a lot of water in the bathroom, whether by playing in the sink while washing hands or just splashing around in the tub and shower. They do not understand that this water is a precious resource, so they might just let the water run. The problem is defined by needing to educate children about conserving water, usable freshwater consisting of less than 1% of our water supply on Earth (University of Michigan, 2006) and also in order to start them in the habits of being conservative with all resources.B. Describe the goal (desired outcome that is specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, timeconstrained) of your project:Our goal is to educate children about the need to conserve the limited amount of water that we have to use on Earth and to teach them to spend less time playing in the sink or tub with the faucet running. The team will design a device that will assist in teaching children this concept. It will be designed, reviewed for usability and child appeal by presenting the designsto teachers, tested by presenting prototypes to children, and improved based on this feedback within four weeks. C. List stakeholders and their relationship to the need. Identify with  if a stakeholder is a direct user.STAKEHOLDERSDIRECT USER ()STAKEHOLDER’S RELATIONSHIP WITH NEEDSchool teacher They will need to implement the product in the classroom and make sure it is used and the purpose is learned by the children.Production company They will make money off of making and selling this device, and they also would care about the design and materials used. The people of Earth It is all of our water that is shared or wasted.Children (in the class)They will use the device and need to be taught this new habit.Parents They would be paying less money if their kids learned not to waste waterFuture Generations They will also need water, and if their parents understandwater conservation they can pass the concept on.Hynes, October 2013 tmpiwohdb4aENGR 131 – Fall 2013 No Impact Children (NIC)D. Describe a minimum of 5 issues that might arise for the stakeholders when your solutionis implemented. The children might be at risk if their fingers get caught in the device or if small parts pose a choking hazard. The people of Earth and the production company might see environmental risks if development of the device uses more and different resources whose depletion would cause negative consequences that outweigh the negative consequences from depletion of freshwater. Also, removing materials from the Earth and dealing with disposal after the device’s lifetime ends can create air pollution, soil erosion, contributions to overwhelming landfills, and destruction of habitats. Furthermore, the teachers may not have the time or resources necessary to teach all the students well. If the device is misused and breaks and causes a flood from the sink, the parents will have issues with the device. Parents might also be dissatisfied if the kids have too much fun using the device and only want to use the sink more, therefore not saving the parents money.E. Describe the stakeholders’ needs, criteria, and constraints.STAKEHOLDERS NEEDS, CRITERIA, and CONSTRAINTSSchool teacher Needs a device that they understand how to use so they can explain it to children, and needs to be cheap so the school can afford it.Production company The final product must sell well enough to make a profit, and the cheaper it can be made the better. The people of Earth The final product needs to teach children about saving water, and the creation of our product should not use more resources than it will end upconserving.Children (in the class) The final product needs to be entertaining enough to engage the childrenand inspire them to want to use it every time. It needs to ensure that theypay
